District 26 – Saint Andrew’s Once Again on Track for Playoff Success

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , , , .

Last season served as an interesting season for the Saint Andrew’s Scots in that it was the first time they went to the FHSAA Final Four as an underdog.  Although they went down as the #1 team in the first round in 2018 they turned the table on then #1 Oxbridge with the one goal upset, rode that next to an OT win over STA after tying it up in the last seconds of regulation before Jupiter handled them in the FHSAA semifinals.

There’s no reason to believe that the Scots will not win the district again, although both SJP II and Boca Raton will be potentially better this season over last.  Those two played one of the more entertaining games I saw last year (caught the 2nd half after a PBA broadcast) and they will likely be facing each other in the district semis for the chance to face the Scots again.  Boca has spent the last few seasons playing a lot of youth and that youth is now a bunch of juniors and ready to take someone down with a big name.  SJP II has been a very consistent program that has finished Top 25 at times and always finds away to get a big win during the season.

American Heritage-Delary was very strong the last two seasons but lost a lot from last year and we’ll be watching to see how they respond to that.  For now, I’ll go with them finishing out the district bracket in what has traditionally been one of the deepest districts in the state.  Neither Spanish River nor West Boca will likely gain traction in the district this year.

Saint Andrew’s 17-3, lost in the FHSAA Semifinals

Head Coach Tony Seaman provided this preview for us:

What are your expectations this season for the team?

We have a group of upperclassmen that have earned valuable minutes previously. They have been working hard both on the field and in the gym. We feel that we will be able to compete for a district title and beyond.

Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season?

Matt Adams (Amherst College) 2018 US Lacrosse All-American

Michael Lizzio (UNC)

Lou Adams

Anthony Molle

Harrison Roth

Adam Stiefel

Gryphon Gurin

Tristan Moss

Corey Frydman

What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year?

We were fortunate to develop a lot of players in various roles. Timmy Martin and Jake Zammiello both played SSDM for us and will be running with long poles this year. Matt Goodman is another defenseman who will see action. Jake Knowles has seen some time in between the pipes and knows the defense very well.

New to the team are some players that will make immediate impacts as well. Max Schwarz (Catholic University) and his brother Kurt will bolster our attack. Harrison Konsker, Anthony Borodiak and Sean Jordan can create opportunities from the midfield. Gunnar Schwarz is a strong netminder who has great hands and footwork around the crease.

What are the games you are really looking forward to this season?

Our district games are always the most important on the schedule.  In addition, we have some great local teams (Jupiter, Oxbridge, Benjamin, Kings and Douglas) and a few from across the state (Cardinal Mooney and Admiral Farragut). We have two games against MIAA powerhouses and the Woodlands from Texas coming down. These games help us prepare for our goal to compete for a state title.
