This Region is likely what the FHSAA had in mind when it came to two classes giving more schools a chance to make their playoffs. The four #1 seeds are Winter Park, Boone, Viera and Windermere. It’s been a long time since one of these schools (Winter Park, although I think Boone might have made a Final Four too in the earlier years of the tourney) played a Final Four game and the fans will be hungry for a berth.
Winter Park is pretty much off the board if there were gambling allowed since they not only are the overwhelming favorite to win their District but this is pretty much a perfect set up for them to get to the Final Four too, clearly being the class of this Region.
In District 5 it was Boone winning the road game by 5 goals at West Orange so it will take a big turnaround with the likely District final played at Boone. But that’s as far as it goes since District 6 has Winter Park waiting after WP dominated Boone on the road last night.
District 6 is Winter Park, undefeated and ranked #4 in last week’s poll . . . nothing needs to be said.
District 7 is all Windermere, even after their bad loss last night to Lake Mary. They defeated #2 seed Dr. Phillips by 12 goals on the road and this is a weak district this year.
District 8 is interesting because both Viera and Vero Beach made a Top 15 poll this year at a point in the season. Viera ran the table in District, including a 10-goal win at Vero Beach during the season. Their 13-4 record includes losses to Lake Mary, St. Edward’s, Oviedo and Lake Brantley, all ranked teams. That schedule clearly set them up to win in their area and they are certainly the favorite to come out of District, but need not to look past Vero , as VB played a monster schedule down the stretch . . . Saint Andrew’s, Pine Crest, SJP, St. Edward’s and King’s Academy . . . to gear up.
It’s pretty much Winter Park going through to Orlando, and I’ll pick them to get past Viera in the Region’s final.
