BOX SCORE

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s lacrosse team escaped with a one-goal win over No. 23 Mount Olive (1-4) in a Top-25 match-up at the ERAU Lacrosse Stadium on Tuesday. The Eagles used a strong first-half performance to edge the Trojans 11-10 and improve to 4-1 on the year.

The Eagles struck first in the first quarter when Sallie Squire put the Eagles on the board with a score at the 10:23 mark. Alexa Zeruto scored two goals in succession, including a strong individual effort that led to her finding the back of the net with just two seconds left on the shot clock. After the Trojans scored their first goal, Kenley Zeruto capped the scoring with a goal of her own to make it 4-1 Eagles heading into the second period.

Morgan Paige opened the scoring for Mount Olive in the second quarter, but the Eagles, helped by a stout defense that forced seven Trojan turnovers, scored five unanswered goals to increase their lead to 9-2 at the half.

Goals were at a premium in the third quarter as the only score came from the stick of Mount Olive’s Bria Hamilton to make in a 9-3 game in favor of Embry-Riddle.

After Squire’s third goal of the game opened the fourth, the Eagles appeared in control with a 10-3 advantage. However, the Trojans turned what seemed to be a done deal into anxious moments for the fans in the stands. Mount Olive used an 11-4 shot advantage to steadily reduce the deficit and with 4:21 remaining the Eagle lead was only 10-9.

At the 1:40 mark, Aubrey Fixen came up with a big save to turn back Ali Davis’ attempt at an equalizer. After a successful clear attempt, the Eagles found Squire and she took the ball to the goal herself and gave the Eagles a small cushion with her fourth goal of the game. Davis got a free position goal with 36 seconds left, but Squire won the next draw and the Eagles held the Trojans at bay to come away with the win.

The Eagles’ next game will be at 7 p.m. on Friday when they host Lee at the Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Stadium.
