BOX SCORE

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women’s lacrosse team could not keep up with their visitors on Thursday, falling 17-6 at Gyrene Field to the Rhodes College Lynx from Tennessee. The Gyrenes played even lacrosse with the Lynx in the second half, but could not dig themselves out of an early hole.

Rhodes jumped on the Gyrenes early, scoring a goal less than a minute into the game to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Lynx scored three goals in the first five minutes, and held a 7-0 lead by the time the first quarter came to an end. Emily Bruner led the charge for the Lynx, scoring a first quarter hat trick with three of the team’s seven goals in the first 15 minutes.

After another goal from the Lynx 72 seconds into the second quarter, Ave Maria got on the board thanks to a goal from Allison Fifield. Monrae Prentice also added a goal for AMU in the second quarter, finding the back of the net with 9:45 to play in the first half. Rhodes would then score the final three goals before halftime, sending the teams to halftime with the Lynx holding a 12-2 lead.

The third quarter was the quietest of the evening, with only three goals scored in the 15 minutes following halftime. AMU’s goal was provided by Orianna Eldridge, who finished on an assist from Sophie Paige. Rhodes scored twice in the frame, as Anna Erskine scored an unassisted goal and Chloe Parker finished on an assist from Bruner.

In the fourth quarter, both teams added three goals to complete the day’s scoring. Ave Maria scored the first two goals of the frame, marking their first back-to-back scores of the day. Fifield scored her second goal of the day just under five minutes into the quarter, while Seiler put one in the net nearly three minutes later. Seiler also scored AMU’s final goal of the day with under three minutes to go in the match, with the assist going to Paige.

Fifield and Seiler led Ave Maria’s scoring output with two goals each, while Paige assisted on two of AMU’s six scores. Seiler was also a defensive leader for the Gyrenes, scooping up four ground balls, while Elie Coyle added three caused turnovers. In goal, Hannah McConologue and Emily Durr combined to make nine saves against Rhodes’ potent attack.

Ave Maria will have less than 48 hours to turn the page and prepare for their first-ever game of Sun Conference lacrosse. The Gyrenes will host the Bobcats of St. Thomas University for the first time, with opening draw set for 1:00 p.m. at Gyrene Field in Ave Maria.
