Rollins outscored CMU 8-1 over the final 20 minutes of the game

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 23, 2023) – The Rollins women’s lacrosse team picked up a 13-9 win over No. 24 Colorado Mesa on Thursday, pushing the Tars’ season record to 10-0. The Mavericks fell to 3-3 with the loss.

Abigail Cawley tallied eight points on four goals and four assists to lead the way, with Caroline Gastonguay contributing three goals to go along with game-highs in ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (3). Charlotte Gastonguay added two goals, an assist, and three ground balls, while Madison McGarry chipped in with two goals and two ground balls. Claire Barber (2-0) got the win, making seven saves in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

• Charlotte Gastonguay got the Tars on the board first, but the Mavericks answered with a goal 31 seconds later to tie it at one.
• Less than two minutes after that, Caroline Gastonguay got her first of the night to put the Tars up 2-1.
• Colorado Mesa was tough defensively the rest of the period, outscoring Rollins 3-0 over the final 10 minutes to open up a 4-2 lead after one quarter.

Second Quarter

• McGarry cut the deficit to one with a goal 36 seconds into the second quarter.
• CMU scored twice in the final five minutes of the frame, with Holyn Trautwein also finding the back of the net in between Maverick goals, making it a 6-4 game at the break.

Third Quarter

• Colorado Mesa extended its lead to three with a goal at the 8:28 mark of the third, but Caroline Gastonguay had a quick response just over a minute later to keep the Tars within two at 7-5.
• About a minute after that the Mavericks once again pushed their lead to three at 8-5.
• Abigail Cawley strung together three consecutive goals over a 2:15 stretch late in the third to draw Rollins back even at 8-8.
• After a Maverick goal put the visitors back in front, Charlotte Gastonguay beat the buzzer with 1.4 seconds on the clock to tie things up at nine at the end of the third.

Fourth Quarter

• Rollins was stout defensively in the final 15 minutes, limiting CMU to just two shots and only allowing one successful clear while forcing the Mavericks into five turnovers.
• Jorie Alf scored at the 7:14 mark to put the Tars up 10-9, which would prove to be the game-winning goal.
• McGarry scored with just under five minutes to play, and Caroline Gastonguay completed her hat trick with 2:39 to go, pushing the lead to 12-9.
• Abigail Cawley’s fourth goal of the night came with 32 ticks left, marking the final tally of the night as Rollins came back for the 13-9 victory.

UP NEXT:
The Tars will have just over a week to prepare for their SSC opener against Palm Beach Atlantic. That game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 1 at Barker Family Stadium, and it will serve as the Tars’ Senior Day for the 2023 season.
