BOX SCORE

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Led by Christian Hofer’s five goals, the Embry-Riddle men’s lacrosse team defended home turf on Sunday, downing Montevallo, 12-10. The Eagles (2-1) used a big second quarter to take a commanding lead over the Falcons (2-2) before holding off a third quarter charge by the visitors to emerge with their second win of 2022.

Hosting the first-ever home contest in Embry-Riddle Athletics history on the day of the Daytona 500, the Eagles scored first when Coleman Jacobs netted his sixth goal of the season five minutes into the game. However, the Falcons responded with a goal just 30 seconds later to tie things up before the both goalkeepers took over for the next several minutes, neither allowing a score until the Falcons took their only lead of the game at the 4:36 mark of the first quarter.

Gage Poindexter made a remarkable individual effort to knot the score at 2-2, and then a big momentum swing happened in the waning seconds of the period when the Falcons turned the ball over and the Eagles raced it up field where Lars Hoeg fired a shot past the Falcon keeper with just four seconds on the clock, giving the home team a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

Hofer got the first of his five scores 67 seconds into the second period, and that started a dominant quarter for the Blue and Gold as they outscored the Falcons, 5-1. Jacobs score two straight goals for the Eagles before Hofer scored two more of his own, giving the pair each a hat trick in the first half.

Embry-Riddle had an 8-3 lead to start the second half, and the Eagles extended it to a six-goal cushion when Joe Anderson received a pass from Hofer and beat Kyle Little in goal a few moments into the half.

Montevallo was able to climb back into the contest by scoring the next three goals, halving the Eagle advantage by the four-minute mark of the third, but a score by Connor Bullock, his first of the year, stopped the run momentarily until the Falcons struck for two more scores in the final 2:06 of the period.

Hofer’s fourth goal of the day early in the fourth pushed Embry-Riddle’s lead to 11-8, and then neither team scored for more than 10 minutes.

Ryan Manning’s caused turnover started a quick Eagle break and Jacobs teamed up with Hofer for a crucial goal at the 3:33 mark, giving the hosts a 12-8 lead.

Embry-Riddle went two men down on a pair of penalties, and that allowed the Falcons to score with 2:51 remaining, and then the visitors struck again with 97 seconds left to draw even closer.

Following a Montevallo timeout with 1:12 on the clock, the Falcons registered two shots, with the second one being saved by Fraser, and the Eagles allowed no more shots over the final 30 seconds to take the 12-10 win.

ERAU out-shot the Falcons 46-34, picked up a dozen more ground balls (38-26) than the visitors, and the combo of Mark Urso and Andrew Ewalt won 14-of-24 face offs. Manning and Michael Forte each caused three turnovers, while Manning’s seven ground balls were the second most of his career.

Embry-Riddle hits the road for the first time this season on Friday, Feb. 25 when the Eagles take on North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
