BOX SCORE

BELMONT, N.C. – Sallie Squire became the latest member of the 100-point club on Saturday in the 17th-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s lacrosse team’s 11-10 win over Belmont Abbey (4-4). With four points on three goals and an assist, Squire is the fifth Eagle in program history to reach the 100-point career mark as the Eagles improve to 8-1 on the year.

Kenley Zeruto was the Eagles’ leading scorer on Saturday, totaling five points on four goals and an assist. Alexa Zeruto added a pair of goals and a pair of assists, while Aubrey Fixen had 11 saves for the third time this season.

For the second time in as many games, the Eagles got off to a fast start as Samantha Reich won the draw and raced down the field unimpeded to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the contest. The Crusaders answered less than a minute later, but goals at the 13:19 and 12:09 marks by Kenley Zeruto and Squire, respectively, gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion. The remainder of the first quarter was marked by turnovers and neither team was able to add to its score, resulting in a 3-1 first-quarter lead for the Blue and Gold.

The majority of the game’s offense came in the second quarter where the teams combined for eight goals. The Eagles scored three of the first four goals to extend their lead to 6-2. The Crusaders scored three of their own to close the gap to 6-4, but goals by Squire and Madison Ellwood in the last 2:56 gave ERAU an 8-4 lead at the half.

The ERAU lead was still four heading into the fourth period after each team scored two goals apiece in the third.

The Eagle offense went cold to start the fourth quarter as they went scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the frame. Belmont Abbey capitalized on the Eagles’ offensive struggles and tallied three goals during that stretch to cut the lead to one goal (10-9) with 5:17 left to play. The Eagles responded by winning the next draw control and Kenley Zeruto ended the scoring drought with a goal at the 4:07 mark to give ERAU an 11-9 cushion. That goal proved crucial as the Crusaders added one more score before time expired, resulting in the 11-10 final.

The Eagles are back on their home field on March 29, hosting Montevallo at 6 p.m.
