Much can change in three weeks. Much can change in the span of a few days.

That was positive news for Maclay’s lacrosse team as it began its playoff quest on Friday night at home against Gulf Breeze in a regional quarterfinal.

The Dolphins handed the Marauders an 18-15 loss on April 5 and had three players score four goals during a sub-par Maclay defensive effort.

Additionally, Maclay needed production from players not named Sam Chase or Matthew Winegardner in order to reach its fullest potential, as it learned in a too-close-for-comfort district championship win over Chiles.

In its playoff opener, the Marauders received both staunch defense against Gulf Breeze during a dominating first half, plus top-notch performances from two freshmen, leading an 18-8 win over the Dolphins to advance to the next round.

“We came out hot and we played how we were supposed to play all season,” senior defenseman Mark Scott said. “We played tight. That’s one of the best halves we’ve played. We have been working on playing the right way. We came out way more aggressive tonight. We’re just ready to compete more.”
