  Congratulations to Matthew on his college choice and good luck in the future!   Name Matthew Congdon High School Chiles High School, Tallahassee Graduation Year 2019 College Choice Lander University, Greenwood, S. Carolina Club Affiliations Wolfpack, Tallahassee Terror Why did you choose this college? I chose Lander University for many reasons. First, it was one of the few schools where I could pursue my engineering degree and continue my lacrosse career at the same time. Because of it’s proximity to Clemson University, I was also excited to learn that they also offer a dual-enrollment program within my field of study. Second, I was really impressed with Coach LePore’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and style of coaching. I had the opportunity to meet him during Lander’s first prospect camp in January. He ran a great practice and he seemed to be the type of coach that I could thrive under. I’m very fortunate that he offered me an opportunity to play for him. Third, as a first year program, I’m thrilled to be part of something that will only grow over time. The idea of playing on a team with nothing to lose, and everything to prove is a something that motivates me as an athlete. I’m looking forward to the challenge of building the program and hopefully leaving a legacy behind for others to follow. Fourth, Lander’s commitment to launching the first public university program in the state of South Carolina impressed me. It was immediately clear to everyone that they’re 110% behind the program. They recently constructed new dorms, and they’re currently building a training facility as well as a new artificial turf field that will be ready for our inaugural season next year. Lastly, what’s not to like about South Carolina? What are your first memories of the sport? Throwing with my dad in the back yard. He always made time for me and my twin brother. Until now, I never understood how much it helped me develop as a high school player. What part of the process was most surprising to you about the recruiting process and what would you like to pass on to those who are going to face it in the future? I was the most surprised by how laid back the coaches are. Just about every coach gave me good advice and encouraged me to keep practicing and honing my skills. However, unless you’re an Under Armor All-American, the recruiting process can be very daunting. My dad and I learned much about it in the past year. If I had one tip for any high school athlete aiming to play in college, I would highly recommend that the student athlete find a school that they want to go to and then contact that coach directly. Send him your highlights from games and keep in touch with him. Coaches want to hear from you and not from your parents. Also, I would attend as many prospect camps as you can in the Summer or Fall. It helps to gauge what kind of player you are as well as indicate the competition you will be up against. Who would you like to thank for helping you get here? There are lot of people helped me along the way, but first and foremost it starts with my parents. I don’t know what I’d do without my father’s guidance and insight into the game of lacrosse. My mom’s overwhelming support for me on and off the field has always been a source of comfort and strength. My coaches have been instrumental in molding me as an athlete, as well as a young man. Lastly, I would like to thank my teammates, who fought with me in the trenches for the past four years. I will miss the comradery that we shared. There’s nothing more meaningful than to play alongside with a bunch of guys you love.
