District 20 – Naples Makes A Statement, Barron Collier Answers

Unfortunately, I have not received any of the questionnaires for this District.
In some ways Barron Collier is the mirror opposite of Gulf Coast, making their FHSAA game so interesting. Last season Barron played through both a number of injuries (I was able to attend their road game at Belen Jesuit, where you could probably have fielded a full roster just from the injured players on both sides) and a much tougher schedule on top of that.
While Gulf Coast played pretty much a local schedule, BC played Oxbridge, St. Thomas, Gulliver Prep, Belen, Jesuit, Stoneman Douglas, Riverview and Loyola Blakefield (Md.). That’s how you should schedule if you are serious about getting better. And it showed in basically a .500 record at the end of the year. One or two more wins against that competition and they’re a Top 25 team.
But the most interesting thing about this district last year was how well Naples played. They were able to knock off BC in the regular season before BC turned the tables on them in the district playoff and that’s a great season for them. Naples actually won the regular season title due to that BC win.
Barron still has to be the favorite to win the district and we’ll see if Naples has built something that can be consistently challenging going forward.
