District 25 – Oxbridge Looks to Make A Deeper Playoff Run

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , , , .
Oxbridge Thunderwolves.  That’s all you need to know about who will win this district this season.  The King’s Academy is building something very nice.  That’s the second thing you need to know.  And John I Leonard was last year’s poster boys for never giving up on yourselves; that’s the third thing you need to know.  Everyone else is looking to build for the future. Probably the most dominating aspect of last year in anything in the state was how Oxbridge played defense against Florida competition.  Against a schedule that included Jupiter (held the eventual STATE CHAMPS to TWO GOALS on the road!), Saint Andrew’s, Ponte Vedra, Bishop Moore, St. Thomas, King’s Academy, Nease, Barron Collier and St. Edward’s the Thunderwolves gave up 6 goals twice . . . and no more than that.  The unfortunate thing is that second 6 came in the first round of the FHSAA bracket in a game they only scored 5 themselves.  And that shows how hard it can be to get to the Final Four out of the Southeast. Of course, the FHSAA still has that scenario set up.  A potential, and likely, Oxbridge-SA 1st round game and the winner facing St. Thomas in Round 2.  Nowhere else in the state does the 1st two rounds set up like that.  Unless they take a leap of faith and seed the quadrants based on ranking.  Trust me Gainesville, it would make the playoffs AWESOME.   Oxbridge 17-3, lost in the FHSAA first round Head Coach Stan Ross gave us this preview: What are your expectations this season for the team? Our expectations for this season is to keep getting better every day, to compete in every game, every practice and every drill. This season is about taking the next step as a program. We will have a JV program for the 1st time in history. Last season we started 6 Freshman on a squad that went 15-2. Coming in I had no idea that our younger players would play this well and we definitely played a schedule that was geared towards a younger group (easy schedule). This season is about prepping the young guys to play at a high level within the next couple seasons. Our schedule this season includes Jupiter, Benjamin, Oxbridge, Heritage Delray, Pine Crest, Lake Brantley, Western, St. Andrews, and IMG B Team. This is a significant increase from last season. I will argue that if we can play with these guys this season, a 6-10 effort is stronger than our 15-2 last season with 10-12 blowouts. We a building for the future and that begins now. On a side note… we lost our junior lefty attackman for the season (85 points last season) to a torn ACL. Significant injury for our program but, we are in for the long haul and in for the fight. This year is about growth and I expect us to grow and mature as the season goes forward. This season will see 6 Sophomore starters and 2 Freshman starters.     Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season? Defenseman Senior Cameron Stovel: Anchor for our Defense – I expect him to commit and sign with Florida Southern any day now – he has been offered. Defenseman: Sophomore Jacob Webb: 121 GB’S last season Goalie: Sophomore Tommy Null: 58% saves last season FOGO: Sophomore Michael Kolkana: 1st team all District as Freshman: 78% FO WON 2018 Midfield: Sophomore Trace Hogan: 77 total points for 2018     What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year? Freshman attack: Aiden Aitken Junior Midfield: Presley Almond Sophomore Midfield: Coby Mcdonald     What are the games you are really looking forward to this season? Oxbridge as always.  Jupiter, Benjamin, and Heritage.  Western because we beat them on a short-handed goal in the last 10 seconds by one goal last season and I know they are to make amends for that.   Park Vista 12-3, lost in the district semifinals We did not receive their questionnaire yet, we’ll update it when we get it   Wellington, 10-6, lost in the district finals Head Coach Johnny Hernandez writes in with the following: What are your expectations this season for the team? To make it to the district championship game after missing it for the first time in 7 years, and to defend the rivals cup vs. palm beach central. Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season? Att. Sr. Hunter Haynes(14,21), Jr. Teddy Miloch(26,22) Mid. Jr. Andrew Crosby(5,5 36gbs) Poles: Jr. Kylle Epstien, Jr. Connor Anthony     What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year? Jr. Aaron Thompson, FOGO Soph. Refugio Perez(61%) , Soph. Jake Roberts, Jr. Matt Granaroli What are the games you are really looking forward to this season? Rivals Cup Game vs. Palm Beach Central and as we are District rivals, Park Vista and Kings, both loses last year.   Cardinal Newman 6-10, did not qualify for district We did not receive their questionnaire yet, we’ll update it when we get it   John I Leonard 9-9, did not qualify for district Head Coach Jeffrey Peters looks to lead JIL to another great year: What are your expectations this season for the team? Build off last season, try and get into district playoffs.  Not as many returning players as originally expected so this will be a different team.     Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season? Jadiel Cruz 23g/11a Jr Mid Julian Perez 11g/7a Sr At What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year? Mike Souffrant (soph mid) Giovanni Joseph (soph goalie) What are the games you are really looking forward to this season? Not going to single any games out.  We need to be competitive in our district.   Palm Beach Central 5-11, did not qualify for district Long time Head Coach Bill Allen sent us the following info about his team: Kyle Johnson our captain is our best defenseman. can play base face off wing on faceoff and even man up for us. Danny Broderick Senior Captain: Good defender. Fast, can clear very well. Chris Connelly: Senior attack. Co-captain looking for big things on the crease from him.
