District 8 – Lake Mary Favored With Lake Brantley Right Behind, Seminole Looks to Narrow The Gap

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , , , .
Always one of the more interesting districts in the state, Lake Mary looks to continue it’s run of titles and get back to an FHSAA playoff run after being upset in the 1st round last year by St. Augustine.  The Rams have built an established feeder program now and it’s always intriguing to see the new talent come up.  Lake Brantley has traditionally produced some of the biggest D1 talent in Florida and they look to get back to the brackets themselves. Last season’s Regular Season records via MaxPreps (Note: possibility not all results were uploaded):
School Name *W-L *Pct. W-L Pct. GF GA
Lake Mary 6-0 1.000 15-4 0.789 239 101
Lake Brantley 3-2 0.600 12-5 0.706 195 91
Seminole 2-2 0.500 7-6 0.538 134 126
Lyman 1-4 0.200 3-16 0.158 61 267
Winter Springs 0-4 0.000 0-15 0.000 66 209
In the district playoff Lake Mary was able to garner the 6-3 win to advance.  Lake Brantley’s record could well have been much better as their 5 losses were by a combined 10 goals and I probably should have at least considered them for Top 25 status in the final poll.   Lake Mary 15-4, lost in the first round of the FHSAA Coach Gary Robinson tends to hold his cards a little close on these previews, as we note here: What are your expectations this season for the team? 1 game at a time, use tough schedule to prepare for playoffs.     Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season? All Seniors except for Strait.   Defenders – Carson Miller (Duke or Ivy League will not play lacrosse) and Ryan Paquette (Rollins), Mids – Kolten Mortimer (TBA-multiple schools for lax), Jake Lockhart (TBA multiple schools for lax and cross country), and Evan Turner  Attack – Jake Panaccione, Goalie – Chase Strait – Junior     What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year? Too many to name, large number of sophomores and freshmen across the board What are the games you are really looking forward to this season? First game then game after then game after…….   Lake Brantley 12-5, lost in the district final Coach Matt Campbell provided his insight: What are your expectations this season for the team? We expect to have another good year and be in position to win districts at the end of the season.  We are returning 5 starters from last year’s team and are excited about players who are moving up from last year’s JV team and returning to the sport.     Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season? Devin Lennon G 59% saves, Travis Lesko D, Jonny Schrager A, Clay Ulmer M, Will Sackman A, Erik Schaefer D, Zach Roose M What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year? Alex Quinones FO, Cole Hoggard LSM, Cade Cecere A, Austin Lounsberry M, Vinny Lopez D, Tyler Kraus D, Carter Adams M, Justyce Berry M, Josh Roberts M     What are the games you are really looking forward to this season? Lake Mary, Hagerty, Winter Park, DeMatha   Seminole 7-6, lost in the district semifinal New Head Coach Trevor Jones wants to see more out of the team this year: What are your expectations this season or the team? We expect to rebound from a tough season last year. We had a ton of graduation the year before. As well as some unexpected injuries and suspensions throughout the season that made it very tough to compete at a consistent level. This year our core is led by a strong group of seniors with a huge class of sophomores that will be seeing tons of playing time. We definitely expect to be more competitive than we were last year and challenge Lake Brantley and Lake Mary in our district. Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season? 4 of our top 5 scorers are returning from last season who will definitely be relied upon to carry the load offensively. Grayden Krull 19g/9a, Ben Riddle 27g/6a, Cam Riddle 18g/22a and Luke Williams 11g/15a. What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year? All three of these guys were freshmen last year who started off mainly as JV players but ended up getting some varsity time last year that will be expected to contribute all season long as primary options on offense and defense. They are Nick Jaffe Mid, Evan Johnson D/LSM and Tyler Hill D/LSM. What are the games you are really looking forward to this season? I’m always excited for Lake Brantley and Lake Mary, since it allows us to see how complete of a team we are every year getting to play such strong programs in our own district. I think our games against Matanzas and Lake Minneola will also be really fun games for our guys to play in. Both programs have been getting better every year and will be contenders in their own districts going forward, which means good competition for us. This is my 1st year as the Head Coach, but my 3rd year with the SHS program as I’ve spent the previous 2 years as the Assistant Head Coach/JV Head Coach.   Lyman 3-16, lost in the district semifinal Unfortunately, we did not receive their questionnaire yet, we will post it when it comes in   Winter Springs 0-15, did not qualify for district Unfortunately, we did not receive their questionnaire yet, we will post it when it comes in
