via Embry-Riddle press release, photo by Tavana Mercado   BOX SCORE JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men’s lacrosse team opened up the 2020 season against the 20th-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Thursday night in Jacksonville. The Eagles fell to the Mavericks, 19-6, in a game played at D.B. Milne Field on the campus of Jacksonville University. ERAU (0-1) was led by Gage Poindexter and Coleman Jacobs who each scored a pair of goals. Mitchell Cody added two assists, while Mark Urso and Jared Kane both tallied goals. Urso was also 13-of-27 in faceoffs. Charlie Wilson (0-1) made 13 saves on the 29 shots he faced, while Lucas Fraser stopped two of five shots in 11:11 of relief. Scoring was at a premium in the first quarter, with both team netting just one goal. Jacobs broke the scoreless tie with the first goal of the 2020 season at the 8:57 mark, but CMU (1-0) answered quickly with its first goal just over a minute later. Poindexter opened the scoring in the second quarter, putting ERAU ahead 2-1 just over 90 seconds into the period. With 7:58 to play in the half, the Mavericks drew even at 2-2, before scoring two more goals in the final four minutes to pull ahead, 4-2. The Blue and Gold didn’t wait long to respond as Jacobs scored his second of the night with 26 seconds left in the half and Urso immediately followed up with a goal just 11 seconds later, coming immediately off of a faceoff win, which sent the teams to the half tied at four. Colorado Mesa found its offense in the third quarter, scoring four straight goals in the first 3:19 of the period before Poindexter stopped the string with his second goal, making it an 8-5 game. The Mavericks then tallied three more markers to push the lead to 11-5 just over halfway through the quarter. Both offenses then went quiet until the final period. CMU continued to build its lead in the fourth, scoring just 27 seconds into the quarter and adding four more in quick succession to increase the margin to 16-5. Kane scored a man-up goal with just under 10 minutes to play to make it 16-6, and the Mavericks kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest as they went on to claim a 19-6 victory. Next up, the Eagles will travel to West Palm Beach to take on perennial NAIA power Keiser at 2 p.m.
