Senior Brittney Embree breaks single-game record for caused turnovers in Tech’s 19-6 win over Edinboro
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – No. 20 Florida Tech outscored Edinboro, 11-2, in the second half and cruised to a 19-6 neutral-site victory over the Scots at Carolina Forest High School.
Leah Dunn paced the Panther offense with a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists.
Mollie Kaplan recorded five goals, an assist, and eight draw controls.
Sam Schiano tallied four goals, six draw controls, and two ground balls and
Kailee O’Briennotched three points on two goals and an assist.
Lexi Woviotis added two goals and four draws.
Brittney Embree caused havoc for the Scots all game and ended up finishing with a record-breaking afternoon. The senior defender set a new program single-game record with seven caused turnovers against Edinboro, surpassing the previous mark of six. Embree also picked up three ground balls in the win.
Jenna Katrina collected four caused turnovers and two ground balls while
Olivia Going and
Madison Ulvenes combined for five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Chloe Zador made six saves in goal to earn her fourth win of the season.
Edinboro kicked off the scoring with a quick unassisted tally by Mary Uplinger just 41 seconds into the contest. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead with 25:34 left in the first half on goals by Kaplan and
Aleah Fjelstad.
The Scots tied the game at 2-2 just over a minute later but Tech then answered with four consecutive goals by four different players.
Schiano got it started with an unassisted effort, and then Dunn fed Kaplan for her second goal of the game at 16:48. Dunn then tacked on her first score of the day before Woviotis found the twine off an assist from Dunn to push the Panthers’ lead to 6-2 with 14:05 to go.
EU tallied two more goals, Dunn and Woviotis would each find the back of the net one more time before the end of the first half, and Florida Tech went into the break leading 8-4.
Christina Marani found O’Brien for the opening goal of the second half to increase Tech’s edge to five goals. Twenty-eight seconds later, the Scots responded with a free position goal by Stephanie Chido to make it 9-5.
However, less than a minute later O’Brien scored for the second time in the game on a free position. She then fed Kaplan for her third goal of the game to build the lead to 11-5 with 21:48 left.
From there, the Panthers were off and running. Florida Tech went on to outscore Edinboro 8-1 the remainder of the game and earn its second win in a row.
The Crimson & Gray finished with an advantage in shots (36-13), ground balls (15-7), and draw controls (18-6). The Panthers also went 8-of-9 on clear attempts, while Edinboro was successful on 6-of-9 tries.
Florida Tech does not have to wait long for its next game as the Panthers host Slippery Rock on Monday, Mar. 11, at 7 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
