Florida Gators Head to Old Dominion for Final Conference Series

NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 9 Florida lacrosse team hits the road for the final conference series of the sea- son, traveling to Old Dominion. The series is slated for April 23/25 at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Friday’s opening draw is set for 3 p.m., while Sunday’s game will begin at 10 a.m. Both games will be streamed on ODU’s website.

Florida is coming off a series sweep of Vanderbilt in which the Gators secured the No. 1 seed in the AAC Tournament and at least a share of the AAC regular season champion- ship. Old Dominion is coming off of two losses to Cincinnati, in which the squad fell to the Bearcats 16-7 and 17-6.
The Gators and the Monarchs are meeting for the first time in program history as this is ODU’s first season as an affiliate member of the AAC.
With Florida’s win over Vanderbilt last weekend, the Gators clinched at least a share of the regular season American Athletic Conference Championship. With one win against the Monarchs, Florida will have secured the conference title outright.
Though this series has no bearing on the seeding for the AAC Tournament – Florida clinched the No. 1 seed a weekend ago against Vanderbilt – the other two series across the conference will determine the final seeding.
The second and third seeds will be determined by the Vanderbilt-Temple series, as both teams have secured their bid to the tournament. Cincinnati would clinch the No. 4 seed with one win against ECU, but if ECU were to sweep the series, they would clinch the final spot in the tournament, to be held in Gainesville on May 6-8.
Scouting the Monarchs
- The Old Dominion Monarchs come into the series with a 3-12 overall record and a 1-7 record in American Athletic Conference play
- Against ranked opponents, Old Dominion is 0-3 this season
- The Gators and Monarchs are meeting for the first time in program history, as this is the first season that ODU has been an affiliate member of the AAC
- Through the season thus far, three Monarchs have scored over 20 points: Lilly Siskind (27g, 11a), Claire Porter (14g, 11a) and Lindsay Baer (11g, 10a)
- Caroline Shaefer controls the draw circle for Old Dominion, coming up with 44 draws this season. Danielle Dundas has added 35 of her own, while Tess Meurling has notched 14 draws in the 2021 campaign
- Defensively, the Monarchs average 8.60 caused turnovers per game, led by 21 apiece from Lauren Carey and Madison Corcoran. Amber Stieve and Maria Rekus have each registered 16 caused turnovers of their own this season
- The Monarchs have three goalies that have all seen relatively the same amount of time in the cage this season. Jenna Peccia leads the way with 334:46 in the cage, coming up with 60 saves and 77 goals allowed in five decisions (2 wins, 3 losses). Sabrina Leatherwood has seen 310:36 between the posts, picking up 46 saves, while allowing 75 goals for a 1-5 record. Finally, Brianna Blatter has seen action in 10 games – totaling 256:36 in the cage. She has recorded 55 saves while only allowing 63 goals
- This is the first meeting between the Gators and Monarchs
- When facing teams not ranked in the IWLCA Top-25 poll, the Gators are 115-5 (.958)
- Amanda O’Leary is the seventh winningest active Division I coach with her .753 winning percentage in 26 seasons (341-112)
- O’Leary has the fourth-most wins of active Division I coaches with 341 and is 179-47 (.792) at Florida
- When scoring at least 14 goals, the Gators are 144-2 (.986) in program history
- Since 2011, Florida has the third-most wins of any Division I women’s lacrosse program with 169
- Cara Trombetta is just 14 groundballs away from overtaking first place in the record books (Haley Hicklen, 194)
- Streaking: Shannon Kavanagh’s 40 consecutive games with a goal is tied for the longest streak in program history (Record – 40 games, Shayna Pirreca)
