Cannons Pick Up Eight in Supplemental Draft

The 2020 MLL Supplemental Draft was held this week and the Cannons came away with eight new additions, including Frank Brown, Griff Caligiuri, Fred Freibott, Mikey Herring, Aidan Marron, Ted Ottens, Matt Schultz, and John Yozzo-Scaperotta. These players will join the team for training camp in May. “We have been very pleased with the players we have signed from our 2019 MLL playoff team, as well as through new acquisitions and trades,” said Cannons Head Coach Sean Quirk. “We drafted several players in the supplemental draft that we believe will compete in training camp, not only to make the Cannons roster but to make an impact on achieving a championship in 2020.” Brown, a midfielder, played for Hobart College from 2013-2017 and tallied 81 goals and 120 points. He reached the 30-goal plateau in his junior and senior seasons and was a member of the Ohio Machine during the 2018 season, scoring four goals and eight points in three games. Caligiuri, 6-4 and 195 pounds, will add some depth to the Cannons defense core for training camp. The long-stick midfielder played 54 games with High Point University before graduating in 2019, tallying six goals, 64 groundballs, and 34 caused turnovers in 54 games. Freibott, another long-stick midfielder, graduated from The Ohio State University in 2018 and joined the Atlanta Blaze for the 2019 MLL season. He appeared in five games and tallied one goal, four caused turnovers, and 11 groundballs. Freibott and Caligiuri will likely compete for a job at LSM during training camp. Herring joined the Cannons late last season and tallied an assist in one game with the club. He was left off the team’s protected roster heading into the draft but will be added back to the roster for training camp. A native of Dedham, Mass., the midfielder had 34 goals and 79 points during his four-year run at Virginia and creates some solid competition within the offensive midfield unit. Marron, a 6-7- and 215-pound defenseman, adds some serious size and strength to Boston’s defensive unit. Marron played at St. John’s University from 2016-2019 and amassed 33 groundballs and 27 caused turnovers in 55 games. Ottens, a faceoff specialist who was on Boston’s preseason roster last year, rejoins the team for training camp again this year. A Connecticut native, Ottens buried 10 goals and went 559-for-962 during his time at Brown University and is slated to compete with Kevin Reisman for the starting job. Schultz played 60 games at Stony Brook before graduating in 2016, scoring 93 goals and 163 points. The attackman scored a career-high 40 goals and was a First-Team All American as a senior. Serving as a defensive midfielder, Yozzo-Scaperotta has played 21 MLL games during his career, notching four caused turnovers and 16 groundballs. He played for the Atlanta Blaze, Florida Launch, and Ohio Machine, and helped the Launch clinch a playoff berth back in 2017. Before joining the MLL, Yozzo-Scaperotta played at Brown University, where he was a USILA Third-Team All American in 2016. He’ll add some depth to the short-stick midfield unit and should compete for a starting job in training camp. “Ottens and Herring were both a part of the Cannons organization last season, and we’re excited to have them back in 2020,” Quirk said. “Yozzo-Scaperrotta and Brown both have professional lacrosse experience, in both the MLL and NLL. Players like Caligiuri, Freibott and Schultz have proven themselves as top Divison I players at their respective institutions, and we look forward to seeing them all compete in training camp in Boston.” Training camp begins in May and the Cannons are set to kick off the 2020 season on Saturday, May 30 in New York.
