SoCon weekly men’s lacrosse honors announced

  SPARTANBURG, S.C. – High Point’s Asher Nolting and Mercer’s Ashton Wood have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games March 30 to April 5. The awards are selected by the league office. High Point’s Nolting recorded a career-high and program-record eight assists in the Panthers’ 13-5 win over Bellarmine on Saturday, the second-most in a game in SoCon history. He assisted on three man-up goals as High Point moved to 2-1 in league play. Despite not scoring a goal on the day, the senior from Greenwood Village, Colorado, scored his third-most points in a game this the season, extending his SoCon career points record to 238 and his SoCon career assists record to 134. Nolting also picked up four ground balls, his second-most in a game this year, and caused two turnovers, matching his season high. Mercer’s Wood recorded a game-high 10 ground balls as the Bears claimed a 15-13 win at Air Force on Saturday for their first SoCon win of the season. Wood, a junior faceoff specialist from Saint Augustine, Florida, also won 16 of his 31 faceoffs and matched his career high with a season-best two assists as Mercer earned its second-ever win over the Falcons. Wood, who hit double digits in ground balls for the fifth time this season, pushed his career total to 253, moving up one spot to fourth in SoCon history and extending his SoCon career record to 8.72 per game. Wood is also the SoCon’s career leader with a .645 faceoff winning percentage. High Point (3-5, 2-1 SoCon) is idle this weekend and returns to action when it hosts Mercer on April 17. The Bears (4-5, 1-1) host league-leading Richmond (4-4, 3-0) on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Spiders are ranked 15th in the USILA/Dynamic Coaches and Inside Lacrosse polls and 19th in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine poll.
