Spartans Battle to Defeat Tars 13-12

  TAMPA, Fla. –  The No. 16 University of Tampa Spartans defeated the No. 20 Rollins College Tars by a final score of 13-12. The University of Tampa is now 11-4 on the 2019 season, 5-0 in the SSC. INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

• To start the game, it was UT on the board first with back-to-back goals from Colin White and Matt Vetter. White was assisted by Jake Mosher McGraw while Vetter was assisted by Chris Cox.
• Rollins then earned their first goal of the contest.
• White answered with his second goal on the night. Once again he was assisted by Vetter.
• The Tars scored once more before Vetter himself earned the last UT goal of the period.
• Heading into the second period the Spartans were led the Tars 4-2.

  2nd Period

• Rollins started the second fast, earning two goals and tying the game.
• With 7:55 left in the half, Mosher McGraw netted one off the assist by Andrew Kew.
• The Spartans then scored the last three goals of the first half.
• Bryan Wright earned the first, followed by a goal by Mosher McGraw from Vetter, and a goal by Vetter from Kew.
• Heading into halftime, the Spartans led the Tars 8-4.

  3rd Period

• Rollins scored five unanswered goals in the third period.
• Finally, Tampa’s first and only goal of the third came from Andrew Kew with 3:47 on the clock.
• At the end of the third period, the game was tied at 9.

  4th Period

• The Tars scored the first two goals of the fourth period.
• Bryan Wright then scored with 8:00 left in the contest.
• Rollins scored once more giving them the 12-10 lead.
• The last three goals of the contest were scored by UT.
• Jake Mosher McGraw earned back-to-back goals from Vetter and Chris Cox respectively.
• Cox himself scored the game-winning goal off the assist by Colin White.
• The No. 16 University of Tampa Spartans defeated the No. 20 Rollins College Tars by a final score of 13-12.

  INSIDE THE STATS:

• Jake Mosher McGraw had an outstanding game for UT, leading the offense with four goals and one assist. Following his efforts was that of Matt Vetter who ended the contest with three goals and three assists.
• On defense, Colin White and Sam Collingwood each had two caused turnovers. White also had two goals and an assist in the contest.
• Ross Dickerson went 11-22 off the faceoff X. He led the team in ground balls with 7.
• While B.J. Borowski started at keeper for the Spartans, it was Bryan Karn who was Tampa’s unsung hero. Karn faced nine shots and recorded six saves.

Carlin’s Career Day Helps Tars Almost Topple No. 16 Tampa

  TAMPA, Fla. (April 10, 2019) – Rollins junior midfielder Brandon Carlin netted a new career high for goals and overall points in a game with a hat trick and added two assists, helping the 20^th-ranked Rollins men’s lacrosse team give the No. 16 University of Tampa Spartans a run for their money on Wednesday night at Naimoli Family Field.  Despite the Tars’ third-quarter comeback and fourth quarter push, Rollins found themselves edged out by the Spartans by a final score of 13-12, marking the closest the Tars have ever gotten to taking down Tampa in program history. The loss drops Rollins to a mark of 8-4, and 2-3 in Sunshine State Conference play, while the Spartans stay perfect in SSC action and advance to a record of 11-4 and 5-0. Behind Carlin’s career day, Ryan Dunn earned a hat trick, while Blake Buell tallied three points with two goals and an assist.  Greg Taicher scored a goal and an assist of his own, followed by Kyle Portera Joey Cinque, and Jackson Colling with one goal apiece.  Tommy Keane added to the Tars’ scoring efforts with an assist on the night. Evan Schimek led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers with seven and four, respectively, earning a new career high for ground balls in a game.  Chase Snyderearned a career high five ground balls of his own, and Roy Hansen notched two caused turnovers.  In goal, Will Eckertplayed a full game, facing 19 shots from the nationally-ranked Spartans where he earned six saves while allowing 13 goals. The Spartans saw a game high six points from Matt Vetter, who notched a hat trick and added three assists, while Jake Mosher McGraw scored four goals and added an assist of his own.  Bryan Wright and Colin White scored two goals apiece, followed by Chris Cox and Andrew Kew with one each.  Both Cox and Kew chipped in two assists, followed by one each from Shane Hanlon, and White.  Ross Dickerson led the team in ground balls with seven as he won 11-of-22 faceoff attempts, while Devon Hess won 5-of-7 and earned four ground balls.  White, and Sam Collingwood notched a team best two caused turnovers apiece.  The Spartans saw three different players in cage throughout the evening, led by B.J. Borowski who faced nine shots in 35:39 minutes of action where he earned two saves while allowing seven goals.  Bryan Karn played a total of 23:02 minutes in cage, facing nine shots where he earned six saves and allowed three goals, while Anthony Caruso played 1:19 minutes, where he faced two shots and was unable to save either. How it Happened: After the first two quarters, Rollins found themselves trailing at the half, 8-4, but the Tars were not about to back down.  Rollins entered into the third quarter with a vengeance, scoring five unanswered goals throughout the first six minutes of the period to take a 9-8 lead with 8:02 left in the quarter, marking their first lead of the game.  The Spartans found the back of the net once throughout the entire third quarter, and with an unassisted goal by Kew with 3:47 left in the period, knotted the score at 9-9 to enter into the final quarter with a tie game.  Colling opened up the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal at the 11:38 mark, followed by an unassisted goal by Dunn to give the Tars an 11-9 lead with 9:40 to play.  However, Tampa’s Wright halted the Tars’ momentum with an unassisted goal of his own with 7:59 on the clock to pull UT back to within one, 11-10.  Blake Buell found the back of the net just 51 seconds later to extend Rollins’ advantage back to two, 12-10, at the 7:08 mark, but back-to-back goals by Jake Mosher McGraw pulled the Spartans even with Rollins with 3:39 to play, 12-12.  Despite the Tars’ best efforts to come out on top, the Spartans gained the one-goal advantage with 1:27 left in the game thanks to a goal by Cox off of an assist by White.  Rollins won the ensuing faceoff, and had an attempt on cage that was saved by Van Horn, which sealed the deal on the Spartans’ slim victory over Rollins. Notes:

• Rollins trails the overall series between the two teams, 0-10.
• Wednesday’s game marked the first time the Tars were ranked when they faced the Spartans
• For his efforts last week, senior defender Evan Schimek was named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and earned a spot on the USILA Division II Team of the Week.
• Ryan Dunn was named Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Tars in scoring against Saint Leo and Florida Southern.
• With 71 career caused turnovers, Evan Schimek is seven away from becoming the program’s all-time leader in career caused turnovers.  Schimek needs to surpass Nick Scannapieco `13, who concluded his career with 77 caused turnovers in his four-year career.
• Brandon Carlin netted a new career high in goals (3), and overall points (5), as he notched a hat trick and added two assists for a team best five points on the evening.
• Evan Schimek‘s seven ground balls mark a new career high for the senior defender.
• Chase Snyder‘s five ground balls also mark a new career high for the sophomore.
