The Lynn Fighting Knights had a strong second quarter on Wednesday, leading them to a 17-9 win over Florida Tech in a Sunshine State Conference lacrosse game in Boca Raton.

“We got outplayed tonight by a good team. “Lynn came in with a good game plan and executed it,” said Panthers coach Mark Penn via email. We failed to execute and the results showed.

Reid Chaconas and Logan Sweeney scored three goals each in the loss, while Xander Cosenza led the Fighting Knights with four goals. He had a lot of help, as Nick McCabe, Mikey Urso, and Keegan Maxwell each contributed a hat-trick.

Sweeney got the Panthers off to a good start, scoring twice in the first 11:49 of the game. Cosenza did the same for Lynn, and it was 2-2 with 7:25 left in the first quarter. McCabe assisted on both of the Cosenza tallies.

Maxwell scored with 2:52 left in the quarter with an assist from Cosenza, only to see Sweeney score a man-up goal with 55 seconds left, tying the game at three. As has been the case in a few games this season, the Panthers were victimized by a late goal, with McCabe scoring with four seconds left, making it a 4-3 Lynn advantage at the end of one.

Panther Offense Stymied by Lynn in Road Loss

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Tech struggled to create much momentum on offense in its SSC road tilt at Lynn on Wednesday night, and the Panthers fell to the Fighting Knights, 17-9, at Bobby Campbell Stadium. “We got outplayed tonight by a good team,” said head coach Mark Penn. “Lynn came in with a good game plan and executed it. We failed to execute and the results showed. “Our offense never got going tonight. We did not react well to Lynn’s defensive scheme and forced the issue too much. We have too much talent on the offensive side to allow that to happen.” Reid Chaconas and Logan Sweeney each scored three goals in the game. Justin WilliamsTommy Bowser and Matt Weinstein tallied one goal apiece while Brett Pohlmeyer dished out one assist. Chaconas also had five ground balls in the game while Addison Abramson collected three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Daniel Flock finished with seven saves in the Panthers’ net. Florida Tech got off to a tremendous start to the game, leading 2-0 less than four minutes into the game thanks to a pair of unassisted tallies by Logan Sweeney. LU’s Nick McCabe connected with Xander Cosenza for consecutive goals, followed by a man-up goal by Keegan Maxwell off an assist from Cosenza, and Lynn led 3-2 with 2:52 left in the first. A man-up tally by Sweeney, off a feed from Pohlmeyer, tied the game at 3-3 but McCabe scored with four seconds to go in the quarter and Lynn went into the second quarter ahead, 4-3. After Williams tied the game up, again, just after the 12:00 mark of the second quarter. However, from there the Fighting Knights ensued on a 6-1 run the rest of the frame, and Lynn went into the intermission leading 10-5. Mikey Urso extended LU’s advantage to 11-5 less than a minute after halftime. Chaconas finally got into the mix with three straight goals, and three of the next four overall, to trim Lynn’s edge to 12-8 with 9:30 to go in the third quarter. LU answered Chaconas’ last goal with a score by Dryden Brous off the ensuing face-off. Lynn added another with 44 seconds left in the quarter to make its lead 14-8. Bowser was able to beat the third quarter buzzer with his eighth goal of the year and cut the margin to five. Lynn tightened up the defense in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Panthers 3-0 en route to a 17-9 win. LU ended with an advantage in shots (43-28), ground balls (32-47) and face-offs (8-29). Lynn went 5-of-8 on man-up tries while Tech ended 1-2. “We have to put this behind us and get ready for Saturday,” Penn stated. “In this conference, you have to bring your “A” game each time out. We have two days to learn from our mistakes and get better. We still have a lot of lacrosse to play and we are still in the postseason hunt.” Florida Tech is back in action on Saturday, April 6, as the Panthers host Palm Beach Atlantic in SSC action at Panther Field.
