Sailfish Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team took the field for the first time this season as they faced off against the Lynn Fighting Knights on the road. Squaring off against one of the best sides in the Sunshine State Conference, the Sailfish fell in their season opener 19-5. The Sailfish fell behind early as the Fighting Knights controlled possession for much of the opening quarter of play. Lynn jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play as they outshot the Sailfish 17-3. Sailfish goalie Gerrit Kurtycz was able to make two saves on the eight shots on goal that he faced. The ‘Fish attack was unable to create many opportunities as they lost the battle in the faceoff circle 13-1 in the opening half, and when they did have chances they were 0-for-3 on extra-man chances and failed to find the back of the net on any of their 10 shots in the opening half. The two sides went to the locker room with the Sailfish trailing 12-0 after 30 minutes of play. The Sailfish got on the board at the 11-minute mark of the third quarter as Hunter Hopman broke the scoring drought. Two minutes later, Henry Sloyan beat Lynn goalie Colin Casey for the second straight Sailfish goal, but the opening deficit was too large for the ‘Fish to overcome. Lynn would go on to score six in the third period and lead 18-2. PBA outscored the Fighting Knights 3-1 in the final period of play as they outshot Lynn 13-10 in the final 15 minutes of play. Zack Figura, Ben Justice, and Christopher Tucker were the Sailfish attackers who were able to find the back of the net late. A Sailfish bright spot was Sailfish goalie Lee Rowden who appeared in the second half and went on to make nine saves. Defensively, Gunner Gebelein and Teagan Hersh led by with four ground balls apiece while Gebelein added two forced turnovers. For the game, the Sailfish were outshot 31-14 in shots on goal and committed 22 turnovers to Lynn’s 13, but the battle in the faceoff circle was the major difference in the game as the Fighting Knights won 24 draws and the Sailfish were able to win just three. The Sailfish will return to action in one week, on March 27, when they travel to face off against the Tampa Spartans.
