#22 Lions Record Most Season Wins in SSC Opener
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 22 Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team earned a 24-6 Sunshine State Conference (SSC) victory over Embry-Riddle on Saturday to remain undefeated, now 12-0 overall, 1-0 in the SSC. The dozen victories earned a newest all-time season win record while continuing to extend the team’s best season start. “We went into this game knowing draw controls would be important,” explained head coach Caitlin Hansen. “To win 23 draws in this game was awesome. Sarah Pierson did a nice job and Ashley Salvett and Delaney Chrisco, who have been strong all season, were exceptional there today.” Tied at 2-2 after five minutes of action, the Saint Leo offense took off on a nine-goal run for an 11-2 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. Embry-Riddle netted their third goal of the game to stop the streak, but the Lions continued to press the Eagles. The Green and Gold put up a four-goal run to earned the running clock advantage and 15-3 halftime lead. “I couldn’t think of a better way for us to start off conference play,” continued Hansen. “The offense really got things going for us while the defense made some big plays to cause turnovers early.” The Eagles scored a pair to open the second half but was answered with two goals by the Lions. The visitors earned their last goal with 18:17 left on the clock, 17-6. Saint Leo sealed the win with a seven-goal run to close out the game. Hansen concluded, “Overall, I am happy with what we saw and look forward to going to Palm Beach Atlantic next weekend.” Stat Highlights- Janee DeLuca turned in seven points scoring five goals and two assists. She added two ground balls and a caused turnover to her big day.
- Leslie Ferguson netted four goals and one assist along with one ground ball.
- Delaney Chrisco and Kaci Archer each tallied a hat-trick.
- Chrisco earned four points (3g, 1a) while picking up six ground balls, six draw controls and causing three turnovers.
- Ashley Salvett also earned six draw controls while Sarah Pierson earned a game-high eight draws.
- In goal, Erin Davis earned the win to raise her record in the net to 7-0. She tallied seven saves in her 60 minutes of work.
- Kaylah Walstad’s assist raised her career mark to 45 assists, tying the program’s all-time assist record. She shares the title with Caroline Fraser who first earned 45 assists between 2014-2017.
- Leslie Ferguson continues to build onto the program’s all-time leading scoring record, now with 123 career goals.
- Two Lions have scored in every game this season; Janee DeLuca and Leslie Ferguson.
- Under the direction of Hansen, the Lions 12-0 season start continues to break the program’s best season start.
- Saint Leo is 1-of-6 Division II teams to remain undefeated among the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top-20 list: Le Moyne, Adelphi, Lindenwood, Rollins, and Regis (Colo.).
