#8 Spartans Take Down Florida Tech

  BOX SCORE MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 8 University of Tampa Spartans women’s lacrosse team earned their second road win of the season with a 10-5 takedown of the Florida Tech Panthers. INSIDE THE MATCHUP: Final: #8 Tampa 10, Florida Tech 5 Records: Tampa 4-1 (3-1 SSC), Florida Tech 0-5 (0-4 SSC) Location: Florida Tech Panther Stadium | Melbourne, Fla. HOW IT HAPPENED: FIRST HALF Attacker Lauren McNeill needed only 30 seconds to score the games opening goal off the Olivia Mott assist. Tampa’s offensive effort was on full display in the early showing with the Spartans cruising to an early 4-0 lead with goals by Cece Colombo (unassisted), Mott (assisted by McNeill), and Mott again (unassisted). Florida Tech responded, netting two goals in just over a minute to cut Tampa’s lead 4-2 with 8:55 left in the first half. Cece Colombo added another goal a minute-and-a-half later for her second of the game, again unassisted. 34 seconds later Freshman Gracie Colombo scored her first career goal, unassisted, to put Tampa back up by four. The Panthers scored the half’s last goal to reduce the Spartans lead to three. Score: 6-3 Tampa SECOND HALF Genie Santarpio, the Spartan’s leading goal scorer, tallied the second half’s opening goal off a helper from Cece Colombo to put Tampa up 7-3. Mott added her third a minute later, 8-3 Tampa. Florida Tech answered, 8-4 with 19:51 left. Gracie Colombo scored her second career goal shortly after, unassisted, 9-4 Tampa. Tech again responded, before Emma McLoughlin scored the games last goal at the 9:28 mark. Score: 10-4 Tampa INSIDE THE STATS:

• Cece Colombo continues to pile up points this season, adding three to her team-leading 19 against Florida Tech (2G, 1A).
• Genie Santarpio picked up her team high 10th goal of the season against the Panthers.
• Freshman Gracie Colombo scored the first two goals of her career.
• Olivia Mott‘s hattrick has her in third place for goals scored this season. She also added an assist.

Florida Tech Loses to No. 8 Tampa

  Panthers fall 10-5 to Spartans at home on Saturday MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech women’s lacrosse team lost a hard-fought game to No. 8 Tampa, 10-5, on Saturday evening at Panther Stadium. The matchup was the Panthers’ second against a top-10 opponent in three days, and their fourth contest against a ranked team in five games this season. Kailee O’Brien paced Florida Tech with two goals and five ground balls and Mollie Kaplan added a goal, an assist and two draw controls. Caroline MacLeod recorded two assists, two caused turnovers and two draw controls while Alexis Townsend and Madison Savje finished with one goal apiece. Millie Hurt collected four draw controls and Rachel Johnson picked up three ground balls and one caused turnover. Maggie Reed had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Emily Harris made 12 saves in goal and had a .545 saves percentage for the Panthers. A slow start for Florida Tech allowed Tampa to jump out to a 4-0 lead with 11:24 to go in the first half. Townsend got the Panthers on the board on a free position goal with 9:45 remaining. Less than a minute later, Savje made a cut in front of the net and scored off a feed from Kaplan to trim the margin to 4-2. After the Spartans pushed their lead to 6-2 with under seven minutes to go, O’Brien scored her first of the night off an assist from MacLeod to make it a 6-3 game at halftime. Tampa struck first in the second half and pushed its advantage to 8-3 with 24:28 left. Kaplan beat her defender down the right wing and scored unassisted to bring the margin to four with less than 20 minutes remaining. MacLeod connected with O’Brien once again for her second goal to make the score 9-5 with 10:49 to go, but the Spartans tallied increased their lead to 10-5 with over nine minutes left. Both teams had opportunities to add to their goal total over the final stretch of the game but neither was able to find the back of the net, and Tampa held on for a five-goal victory. The Spartans finished with an edge in shots (28-17) and ground balls (21-19) while Tech collected more draw controls (9-8). Tampa went 17-18 on clear attempts and the Panthers were successful on 18-21 clears. Next up for Florida Tech is a rematch with Saint Leo on Wednesday, April 7, in Saint Leo, Fla. The Lions won the first meeting 19-6 in Melbourne on March 27 but the Panthers are playing like a much different team than they did in that game. Round two between the teams is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at University Turf Stadium. Panthers Hang Tough in Loss to No. 8 Tampa

  Excerpt: The Florida Tech women’s lacrosse team suffered their fifth consecutive loss on Saturday, dropping a 10-5 decision to the eighth-ranked Tampa Spartans. This game came on the heels of two overtime losses already this season and a loss to perennial powerhouse Florida Southern to start the season. Panthers freshman goalie Emily Harris kept her team in this game all night long as she recorded 12 saves, including eight in the first half. Tampa’s Alex Walling had 10 saves in the victory. Tampa (4-1, 3-1) scored the first four goals of the contest, two from Olivia Mott. Alexis Townsend broke the seal for the Panthers with a goal coming with 9:45 left in the first half, her fifth of the season.   Read the rest HERE
