Tars Too Much for Florida Tech in Overtime

The No. 10 Tars escaped an upset scare from Florida Tech   BOX SCORE WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 31, 2021) – The No. 10 Tars escaped an upset scare from Florida Tech, as Rollins defeated the Panthers 7-6 in overtime.  The Tars improve to 2-1 on the year, and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.  Florida Tech remains winless, falling to 0-4 overall, and 0-3 in conference action. Caroline Gastonguay tallied a hat-trick, including the game winner to lead Rollins.  Sammy Ottimo tallied a pair of key scores for the Tars.  Bridget Cawley forced a pair of turnovers as part of a stingy defensive effort.  Gabby Tanner made ten saves as a key player in the Rollins backline. Rachel Johnson scored a hat trick for Florida Tech, accounting for half of her team’s goals.  Emily Harris made six saves, playing the full game between the pipes. Florida Tech netted the first two goals of the game.  Gastonguay got Rollins on the board just past the half way point of the first half.  The Panthers would respond with two more goals to take their largest lead of the game, at 4-1.  Rollins would pull the score to within one before the break.  Gastonguay tallied her second of the game, off an assist from Nikki Stumpf in transition, to make it 4-2.  Then, with one minute to go before the break, Eden Cooke snuck around the goal and beat the Florida Tech keeper with a low angle shot. Florida Tech extended the lead to two, with the first goal of the second half, at the 22 minute mark.  Ottimo then started the Rollins comeback, raced by her defender and put a shot high and in the back of the net with 14 minutes remaining in regulation, pulling Rollins back to within one.  Johnson would score her third, and make the tally 6-4, with ten minutes left.  Liz Fahey scored Rollins fifth goal coming off an assist from Cooke.  Ottimo would draw the game level with a free position goal with just under seven minutes remaining.  Both defenses would clamp down, including a pair of key saves from Tanner, to send the game to overtime. The Panthers would earn the first possession of the extra time, but Bridget Cawley forced a Florida Tech turnover to get Rollins the ball.  Abigail Cawley fed a cutting Gastonguay for the overtime winner.  The sophomore caught the pass and finished low, despite a push sending her tumbling, giving Rollins the victory. Panthers Can’t Hold Off Tars in OT

Excerpt: The Florida Tech women’s lacrosse team suffered its second overtime loss in three games on Wednesday, falling to the 10th-ranked Rollins College Tars, 7-6. The Panthers (0-4) held the lead for the majority of the match, but a two-goal finish by the home-standing Tars in regulation tied the game at six before Caroline Gastonguay scored with 48 seconds left in the first overtime to complete her hat trick and give Rollins the victory. Rachel Johnson, who scored six goals last Wednesday in the Panthers 16-15 OT loss to Lynn netted a hat-trick in this one, with Mollie Kaplan scoring two goals and Alexis Townsend notching a goal and an assist. Townsend got the scoring started 10:35 in and Johnson followed with her first, assisted by Townsend. Gastonguay answered to make it 2-1 before Johnson scored a free-position goal to help the Panthers regain their two-goal lead.   Read the rest HERE
