Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by Lions

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse traveled for a rematch against No. 22 Saint Leo (5-4, 4-3 SSC) on Saturday. The ‘Fish were unable to pull off the upset as they were missing several key players on offense and in the midfield for today’s game. PBA (1-7, 1-5 SSC) started slow in the first half, but doubled its goal output in the second half. Unfortunately for the ‘Fish, they fell short to the Lions 20-9. Anna Laskeris and Katie Karlsen led PBA with three goals each. Katie Avena and Madeline Bassoff scored their first career collegiate goals in the contest. Kaelin DeNeui also found the back of the net for the ‘Fish. Laskeris, Bassoff and Taylor Gutmann led PBA with an assist each. The game was even through the first 10 minutes of action. Karlsen answered Saint Leo’s opening goal with her first goal of the day to tie the game at one early in the game. Saint Leo broke the game open in the next 10 minutes of play. An 8-0 run gave the Lions a 9-1 lead before the Sailfish ended the half with a pair of goals to make it 9-3 at halftime. Both teams matched each other with a pair of goals to open the half, but the Lions ended any thought of a Sailfish comeback with a 5-0 run to make it 16-5 with 15 minutes to go. The Sailfish went on a 4-2 run of their own, but Saint Leo’s lead never wavered as the Lions won 20-9. Abigal Nehring got the start in goal for the Sailfish. She recorded nine saves and tied Jillian Kolakowski with a team-high three ground balls. Sarah Vernarelli finished the game in goal with three saves in the game. Turnovers were the real Achilles’ heel for the ‘Fish as they totaled 17 in the game compared to SLU’s 11. PBA is scheduled to conclude its season on Friday against No. 6-ranked Tampa. The game in Tampa, Fla. takes place at 7 p.m.
