Tampa Catholic 2021 Taylor Matthews Commits to Howard University!

Congratulations to Taylor on her college choice and good luck in the future!   Name Taylor Matthews High School Tampa Catholic High School Graduation Year 2021 College Choice Howard University Club Affiliations Intrepid Lacrosse Club     Why did you choose this college? I chose Howard University because of the city’s location, history, criminology program, and the family-like atmosphere with the Lacrosse teammates. I want to be a lawyer or in a government organization. And, Howard University is perfect, because the FBI, CIA, and other government agencies are right at your fingertips in DC as well as many top tier law schools including Howard University! I also chose Howard, because I love the vibrant city scenery of DC. What are your first memories of the sport? One of my first memories is being so excited about picking out my pink and blue lacrosse stick with pink goggles. Also, when I first started playing midfield for my elementary school Winchester Thurston School in Pittsburgh, PA, and sprinting down the field with the ball and scoring my first goal in 6th grade. What part of the process was most surprising to you about the recruiting process and what would you like to pass on to those who are going to face it in the future? The most surprising part was that in lacrosse you have to wait until Junior year for D1 and D2 coaches to communicate with you. My dad played basketball at The University Of Pittsburgh, basketball, and lacrosse recruiting are very different so, some of the advice he would give me I couldn’t apply to lacrosse recruiting. I think the most important thing in recruiting is to be patient and be persistent. You are most likely not going to commit to the first school you talk to and that is ok, take time with your decision and make sure it’s where you want to go, not your parents. Make sure you pick a school you would want to attend even if you couldn’t play lacrosse anymore. Also, I would say be persistent. Coaches don’t always know how interested you are and read many emails from recruits a day. Keep emailing them so they know you are very interested in their university and sports program. If the coaches show a lack of interest, ask ways you can improve your game. There is a school for everyone! Who would you like to thank for helping you get here? I want to thank my Mom and Dad for always supporting me and guiding me, all my coaches past and present, especially Coach Joe and my club coach, Coach Becky Luzier. I also want to thank all my teammates, friends, and family for their constant support and encouragement!
