FIT: Christ’s 11 Draw Control Wins help Tech Tame Lions

Mars Hill, N.C. – The Florida Tech women’s lacrosse team ventured over from facing Lincoln Memorial near the Cumberland Mountains in Tennessee over To Mars Hill in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina for Sunday’s contest against the Mars Hill Lions. The Panthers came out on top with a decisive 21-7 win over the Lions.

FIRST QUARTER:

  • Gillian Craig started the game off for Panthers with a goal 1:15 into the game.
  • Millie Hurt recorded her fourth goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Mars Hill answered back to bring the game back within one with 11:07 remaining in the first.
  • Carly Niro scored off an assist from Jennifer Boyle to put the Panthers up 3-1.
  • Unassisted goal by Sophia ScichiloneJennifer Boyle and Rachel Johnson helped Tech go ahead 6-1.
  • A Mars Hill goal followed by Kayla Minton’s sixth goal of the season allowed the Crimson and Grey to head into the second quarter with a 7-2 lead.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Scichilone’s second goal of the game started of the second quarter of play thanks to an assist from Karly Liebendorfer.
  • Scichilone would then help then Panthers score once again after assisting Kailee O’Brien with the panthers a woman up to go ahead 9-2.
  • Three unanswered goals from the Lions brought the game back to within four goals but still trailed 9-4.
  • Boyle’s second goal of the game, thanks to a Carly Niro assist, allowed the Panthers to head into halftime on the road with a 10-5 lead over the Lions.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • Millie Hurts started off the third quarter strong with her second goal of the contest a woman up with the help of Charlotte Hardie who assisted on the play.
  • With the Panthers a woman up once again, Rachel Johnson pushed Florida Tech’s led to seven at 12-5 with 12:33 to go in the third.
  • Kayla Minton’s second goal of the game 34-seconds later gave Tech the 13-5 lead.
  • Gillian Craig become the sixth Panther to score two goals in the game as her woman goal five gave Tech the nine-goal lead.
  • Boyle’s hat trick goal off an assist from Craig a woman up allowed the clock to start running with the Panthers lead 15-5 with 10:49 to go in the third.
  • Minton’s third goal of the game gave her a hat trick for the Panthers to score their seventh unanswered goal to go ahead 16-5 with 9:12 remaining in the third.
  • Gillian Craigs third goal of the game came in the final minute of the third to put the Panthers up 17-6 heading into the final quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Niro’s second goal against the Lions came of an assist thanks to Gabrielle Skowronski to start off the fourth.
  • Scichilone’s fourth goal helped put the Panthers up 19-6 before Karly Liebendorfer recorded Tech’s 20th goal in the game.
  • Mars Hill then scored to make the game 20-7 before Liebendorfer scored the final goal of the game to give the Florida Tech the 21-7 win over the Mars Hill Lions.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Elizabeth Christ dominated the draw controls picking up 11 in the game nearly the second the single game draw control wins record which sits at 12.
  • Scichilone, Boyle, Craig and Minton all recorded hat tricks against the Lions
  • Scichilone, Boyle, and Craig all recorded four points from three goals and an assist.
  • Rachel Johnson finished with four points from two goals and two assists.
  • Kailee O’Brien led the Panthers with four ground balls.
  • Johnson led the team causing two turnovers.
  • The two North Carolina native’s Kellen Lucchesi and Emily Harris split time in the net with Lucchesi picking up the win.
  • Lucchesi recorded two saves while Harris picked up one in the contest.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Florida Tech out shot Mars Hill 40-14 with 33 shots on goal to the Lions 10.
  • The Panthers were perfect going 17-17 on clear attempts while Mars Hill was 10-18.
  • Florida Tech picked up 22 ground balls compared to Mars Hills 17.
  • The Crimson and Grey won 23 draw controls to that of the Lions seven draw control wins.
  • Both teams had four free-position shots in the contest.
