FLN Boys 1A Top 15 for the Week Ending 3/12/23!

St. Edward’s 12 – Saint Andrew’s 10

Came out of nowhere. Last year it was SA by 3 at SE, and it wasn’t really that close. Upsets have been a part of college lacrosse for a long while, but we don’t see them as frequently in high school in this state. Just another sign of the growth going on around us.

The MIAA has come to town, as well as other out-of-state games, and we usually discount those results. Boys’ Latin looked dominant last night versus St Thomas, and SA has them on Tuesday. We’ll talk further about Ponte Vedra’s trip in the 2A poll article.

Here’s last week’s Poll as the starting point:

5t) St Edward’s (5-2)

9) Community School of Naples (4-1)

10) Holy Trinity Episcopal (7-0)

11) Pine Crest (2-3)

12) Oxbridge (4-3)

13) Canterbury (3-2)

Lots of results to factor in this week and a few teams that were off.

SA bookended the St. Edward’s loss with wins over Oxbridge and last night at Benjamin in a 3-day span. Right now there are only 4 games left on the schedule, spread over a 21-day period. If anyone wants a game with them, give them a call!

Lake Highland swept Lake Brantley and Bishop Moore, and have Cardinal Mooney at home on Tuesday and travel to Benjamin on Friday. CM will be looking for revenge for last year’s loss while Benjamin looks to continue their recent success against the Highlanders.

Bolles was off this week, and has four games scheduled this week; they should have no trouble with all 4 games. Benjamin took down St. Edward’s before the SA game, and have a loaded schedule coming along, with SJP and LHP this week, followed by a trip to play Plant and Jesuit over in Tampa.

Jesuit took their Cup game (Ihrig-Shaler Cup) with Plant, 12-11, and they also have a similar schedule to Benjamin coming down the stretch; a great chance to lay some strong markers as they prepare for what is looking like a heck of a Region 3 bracket semifinals/finals.

St. Edward’s massive schedule continues, and one storyline will be how their SA win impacts their play over the rest of that schedule. They do have this week off to get ready for the home stretch. Community School continues to impress but doesn’t quite have the same level schedule as the others. They do have Cardinal Mooney on the 21st on the road, so a signature win is awaiting them should they win.

SJP travels to Benjamin on Tuesday after taking an impressive road win at Belen Jesuit last week. There are a number of interesting matchups coming up for them, including a late-season road trip to 2A #1 Lake Mary. Holy Trinity is off this week as the easy part of the schedule comes to a close.

Pine Crest continues to struggle with their roster issue but the schedule lightens up for this upcoming week. Oxbridge went 1-1 on the week, taking a road win at PC, while losing to SA. Jupiter is up next and that is it for their tougher Florida opponents, giving them time to gear up for the playoffs.

Canterbury and Montverde are both struggling and need some quality wins. Canterbury has one over Oxbridge, but lost this week to both Bishop Verot and Columbus. There’s some game left to make an impact, and that starts with Tuesday against Community. Montverde travels south to St. Thomas on Saturday.

Belen split the week and took the local rivalry game with Gulliver, which is a hot and cold team right now. Oak Hall continues to win but has a ceiling for the schedule; they should run the table. NSU kind of has the same issue, but does have the Belen win already. Just not a lot of quality games left.

Bishop Verot had the best week of the Also-Considered’s, knocking off Canterbury. They travel to Belen later this season and host Gulf Coast. Two wins and they should run the table. Episcopal was off this week.

When I look at who is making a move, there’s St. Stephen’s at 5-0, but a weak schedule. They have their shot at BV this week and that’s the only game that could garner a thought. American Heritage-Plantation only has a 2-1 record posted, and only 9 games scheduled, but most of those are quality games, so they have their chance in front of them. The best of the bunch is likely King’s Academy, with two 1-goal losses to go with their 6-4 record, and they also have plenty of good games coming up.

When you look at this week’s poll, it might look a bit strange to see the 3-way tie at #4, but there’s that old A over B, B over C and C beats A, so we can let it play out another week. Right now, we are shaping up for a heck of a 1A tournament. And even though St. Edward’s has the big win, it’s still about the entire body of work. It all works out in May anyhow . . .
