#18 Mocs Score Second-Most Goals in Program History in Dominating Performance

LAKELAND, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Florida Southern men’s lacrosse team kept the momentum rolling Friday night as the Moccasins captured their fourth-straight victory while scoring the second most goals in a single game in program history. The Mocs took down the visiting Flagler College Saints 28-8 while 16 different Mocs found the back of the net.

The victory improves FSC’s record to 6-2 on the season while the Saints fell to 2-8 on the year including 1-7 against Sunshine State Conference opponents.

Senior Sean Nolan once again led the offensive attack as he notched his seventh hat trick of the season while posting his highest goal output of the season with six. He also handed out a pair of assists to finish with a team-best eight points on the night. The six goals moves him within just six goals of the career goals scored record at FSC. Nolan heads into the SSC opener at Lynn with 169 career goals while the career leader, Dane Sorensen (2012-15), holds the record with 175.

Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck added a hat trick of his own with three goals off of six shots. Five others scored two goals each including freshman Nolan Tighe, graduate student Jay Minor, graduate student Andrew Medeiros, senior Lucas Sommers and junior Brendan Glasser. Minor and Medeiros led the way in assists with three each to finish tied for second on the team with five points apiece.

The FSC defense once again had a tremendous night causing 18 of FSC’s 26 turnovers. Senior Griffin Phillips, graduate student Craig Connor, senior Ian Wallace and senior Nick Shannon all posted three caused turnovers in the contest to lead the way. Shannon added six ground balls while Wallace finished with four.

Junior Michael Simone earned his fourth-straight start in goal and improved to 4-0 on the season while making seven saves and allowing seven goals in 47-plus minutes of action. Four other keepers played the remaining 12-plus minutes. Graduate student Maxwell Freestone was the only other goalie to face a shot on goal and made one save while allowing one goal in nine-plus minutes of action.

Freshman Jacob Czyz once again took the majority of the face offs versus the Saints and finished 18-of-30 (.600) on the night. Classmate Luke Henricksen won 5-of-8 (.625) while fellow freshman Zach Cannone went 0-of-1 (.000).

FSC stormed out of the gates scoring seven unanswered goals over the opening nine minutes of the contest. The Saints would respond with back-to-back goals over the course of just 30 seconds of game play. The Mocs would tack on two more before the end of the quarter as FSC led 9-2 at the break.

The Saints scored the opening goal of the second quarter just 25 seconds into the period but the Mocs would respond with five-straight tallies to take a 14-3 lead with 6:14 left in the half. The Saints outscored the Mocs 2-1 over the final six minutes to trail at halftime 15-5.

The third quarter was nearly all Moccasins as FSC outscored the Saints 7-1 over the 15 minutes to take a commanding 22-6 lead heading into the fourth. FSC would spend a considerable amount of time in the fourth just running the shot clock down to allow the game clock to continue running but the Mocs were still able to outscore the visitors 6-2 in the period and walk away with a 28-8 victory.

The Mocs will now begin preparation for their 2023 Sunshine State Conference opener on the road at Lynn. FSC will travel to Boca Raton this Thursday, March 23 for a 6 p.m. contest with the Fighting Knights.
