Watson and Waldbaum Lead Offensive Surge in Victory Against the Red Storm

QUEENS, N.Y- The Jacksonville men’s lacrosse team defeated the St. John’s Red Storms 17-9 on Saturday afternoon in New York. Grad students Dylan Watson and Max Waldbaum combined for nine goals in the effort

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dolphins flew out of the gates to start the game when Max Waldbaum found net just over 90 seconds into the contest. St. John’s responded with two goals themselves over the next four minutes, only to have their shots equalized by two consecutive Dylan Watson goals. JU held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

St. John’s found net first in the second quarter to tie the game, but the next 11 plus minutes were all Jacksonville. Jacob Greiner scored his first of the contest at 13:44, Watson then added two more to compliment a Waldbaum goal and JU was up 7-3 in the blink of an eye. Greiner rounded out the scoring to give JU a five goal lead, but a couple of last minute Red Storms brought the score closer before half, 8-5.

Jacksonville again soared out of the gates of the third quarter, finding net four times in four minutes. Ibrahim Pio and Ethan Lamond netted their firsts of the game with Waldbaum scoring two more times to secure his first hat-trick of the season with 11:03 in the third quarter.

Jacksonville then outscored St. John’s 5-4 the rest of the way, which included a Gavin Angell goal from a man-down situation, to pick up their third victory in seven days.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Watson and Waldbaum’s hat-tricks were their 33rd and 49th, respectively, of their careers
Jacksonville as a unit recorded 43 ground balls to St. John’s 24.
Watson’s five point game was the first 5+ point game by a Dolphin this season.
Nathan Kapp’s 14 ground balls were also a team high this season. The amount is tied for the second most in a single game in his career
