Jacksonville, Fla. – The Jacksonville men’s lacrosse program has announced its team captains for the 2022 season.

Troy HettingerJacob GreinerDixon SmithJeremy Winston and Max Waldbaum have been selected by their peers to lead the Dolphins this spring.

“Our team has chosen their leadership for the 2022 spring,” head coach John Galloway said. “After coaches’ deliberation and team voting, we have chosen the core leadership group that we will lean to in times of triumph and adversity. To be chosen, these men needed 2/3’s vote (super majority) from the team to be named captain, which is a resounding number. The best teams are player-led, and these guys are the ones that our team trusts to do just that.”

Hettinger, a redshirt-junior from Ellicott City, Md., will serve as the primary captain for the Dolphins in 2022. In 32 career contests, the midfielder has recorded 15 goals and 40 groundballs. Hettinger has been named a three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, while being named a SoCon Academic All-Conference choice in 2021. Outside of lacrosse, Troy completed a summer internship in 2021 with Miller Electric, as a Learning and Analytics Intern.

“Troy will serve as our primary captain, while Max, Jacob, Jeremy and Dixon will serve in an assistant captain role,” Galloway said. “Troy is the model of who we want to be as a program and has continued to live that example since the day he has stepped on campus.”

“It was an honor to named captain of a team with so many great lacrosse players and even better people,” said Hettinger.

Greiner returns for his redshirt-sophomore campaign for the Dolphins in 2022. An Exton, Pa., product, Greiner has registered 23 goals, eight assists, and 14 groundballs in 12 career contests. An SB Nation/College Crosse All-Freshman Team selection as a true freshman in 2020, Greiner was selected to the SoCon All-Freshman team as a redshirt-freshman last season. Off the field, Greiner is a two-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll choice, as well as being named to the SoCon Academic All-Conference Team last spring.

“Jacob is often a model of who we want to be,” said Galloway. “He reminds me a lot of Troy. He does everything right on and off the field, and never looks for the attention. His work ethic is a model for our locker room.”

“I am honored to be able to help lead these guys. I love this team and would do anything for them,” Greiner said.

Smith returns for his fifth season as a Dolphin this spring, having recently being named to the 2022 Preseason All-Southern Conference Team. A Dallas, Texas, native, Smith has recorded 110 groundballs and 64 caused turnovers in 48 career contests. A 2018 SB Nation/College Crosse All-Freshman Team choice, Smith also earned conference honors being named an All-SoCon Second Team and SoCon All-Freshman Team selection in 2018. Off the field, Smith has been named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll three times for his efforts in the classroom. Outside of lacrosse, Dixon completed an internship last summer with JLL, as a Brokerage Intern.

“I love this group of guys and being chosen by my teammates means a great deal to me,” said Smith.

Another product of Dallas Texas, Winston also returns for his fifth season with the ‘Phins this season. In 48 career contests, Winston has registered 55 goals, 19 assists, and 37 groundballs for Jacksonville. An SB Nation/College Crosse All-Freshman Team choice in 2018, Winston additionally earned conference honors being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.

“I have always been considered a leader on this team, but I feel really honored to have been chosen by my brothers and coaches to take on the challenge of leading this team,” Winston said. “I look forward to leading with Troy and the other assistant captains in my final year as a Dolphin.”

“Dixon and Jeremy have been five-year leaders for this program,” said Galloway. “Both have been rocks for me since they have stepped foot on campus. I believe this team plays for them. They have and will continue to build the legacy of JU lacrosse because of their selfless leadership.”

A newcomer to Jacksonville, Waldbaum joins the Dolphins after spending the previous four seasons at Tufts University. A native of Denver, Colo., Waldbaum played in 34 games, recording 102 goals, 27 assists, and 73 groundballs for the Jumbos. Off the field, Max was named an Academic All-American in 2021. Outside of lacrosse, Max completed a summer internship in 2021 with SteriLumen, as a Sales and Market Research Intern.

“While Max is a newcomer to our program, his impact has been felt immediately,” Galloway said. “His daily competitive spirit and consistency has resonated with his teammates. He will continue to elevate our competitiveness on and off the field with his demeanor.”

“I appreciate the trust of my teammates and I look forward to helping them in this role,” said Waldbaum.

“Each of these five men bring a different type of leadership style to our locker room, and I am excited to watch each one of them grow in this role to continue to promote the core values of our Duval Mission,” Galloway said.

The Dolphins open the 2022 season on Feb. 5 on the road at historic Homewood Field versus Johns Hopkins. Jacksonville’s home opener is slated for Feb. 19 versus Marquette at Rock Stadium.
