JU Women’s Lacrosse Wins in OT Against Arizona State

Jacksonville, Fla. – The Jacksonville Women’s Lacrosse team won against Arizona State 10-9 in overtime Friday at Rock Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first quarter started with both sides’ offensive lines working to find the back of the net. Lauren Ellis had her first goal of the contest with an assist from Grace Hobson at 6:42, shortly after Sarah Elms found the net to tie up the score at 2-2. Arizona State scored three goals to end the quarter with a 5-2 Sun Devils score. 

Jacksonville kicked off the first quarter with back-to-back goals. Sarah Elms got her second goal and first shot of the quarter at 12:48. Shortly after, Lauren Craft scored with an assist from Grace Hobson at 5:37; the score showed 5-4 Sun Devils. Jacksonville held Arizona State to one goal in the second quarter while they racked up two more goals. Sarah Elms hit the net, with a ground ball pickup to score off of a free position at 7:30. Brianna Samuels made the final goal of the quarter with Grace Hobson’s third assist of the night; the Dolphins and Sun Devils were neck in neck with a score tied at 6-6. 

The Dolphins held the Sun Devils at six goals, not allowing them to get a single shot off in the third quarter. Sarah Elms earned the only quarter goal, which allowed Jacksonville to take the lead 7-6. 

Arizona State scored two goals at the start of the fourth quarter, earning them an 8-7 lead over Jacksonville. Lauren Craft was able to tie the game at 8-8 with a shot at 11:33. The quarter’s final minutes were a nail-biter as Arizona State scored to pull ahead 9-8. With less than 5 minutes remaining, Grace Hobson scored to tie the game up at 9-9 and sent the game into overtime.

In the sudden-death overtime, Jacksonville won the draw control and was able to work the ball around the circle to set the tempo. Lauren Ellis was able to find space and rip a shot off on the net for the game-winning goal and a final score of 10-9 Jacksonville.
