MSD Alum Sammy Fisher Named CAA Rookie of the Week!

RICHMOND, Va.– The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has announced that Elon women’s lacrosse’s Gillian Curran and Sammy Fisher have earned CAA weekly awards for the performances against Campbell and Furman last week. Curran was named the Defensive Player of Week, while Fisher was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.

“I’m so proud of both Sammy and Gillian” said head coach Josh Hexter. “Their effort has been on point this past week in practice, so I’m not at all surprised on their performances. Both have been playing with grit and confidence, which is fun to see.” 

In Elon’s 22-20 win over Campbell, Curran recorded a career-high 12 draw controls to tie for second most in a single game by a CAA player. She also paced the team in ground balls (4) in addition to adding two caused turnovers, one goal and one assist.

Curran also posted a career-high six ground balls in the Phoenix’s 21-9 victory over Furman to tie for the game high. She also paced both teams in draw controls (6) in addition to tying Kaitlyn Michaud and Furman’s Meagan Beal for the game high in caused turnovers (3).

Fisher averaged 3.5 goals per game in Elon’s 2-0 week against Campbell (22-20) and Furman (21-9). She also totaled five draw controls and one caused turnover. Through six games, the freshman is fourth on the roster in draw controls (6) and sixth in goals scored (7).

The Phoenix will next travel to VCU for a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday, March 12.
