Patriot League Honors Yovino Again, with TWO Awards This Week

Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Players of the Week Announced (3.27.23)

Navy’s collects three weekly honors; American and Bucknell earn one apiece

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Navy received three Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse weekly awards when the League office announced honors on Monday. American and Bucknell claimed one weekly honor apiece.  

Mids’ freshman Ava Yovino was named Patriot League Midfielder and Rookie of the Week after recording six points on three goals and three assists with two draw controls, two caused turnovers and one ground ball in a 15-4 road victory at Lehigh. Sophomore Emma Richardell made a career-high 11 saves and held the Mountain Hawks to a season-low four goals to receive Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week.

American senior Emma Hare received her first Patriot League Attacker of the Week by finishing with five points on three goals and two assists in the Eagles’ 12-7 win over Holy Cross.   

Bucknell senior defender Ella Payer was selected as Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after posting game-highs of nine draw controls, five ground balls and four draw controls in the Bison’s 17-15 win over the Leopards.

American junior goalkeeper Mary Alice Collins and freshman defender Bliss Vernon, Army West Point junior goalkeeper Lacey Bartholomay and freshman midfielder Brigid Duffy, Bucknell sophomore attack Allie Boyce, Loyola Maryland graduate student defender Katie Detwiler, sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Spence and graduate student midfielder Jillian Wilson, Navy sophomore defender Grace Peterson and junior attack Leelee Denton all received honorable mentions for their performances last week.

The Patriot League women’s lacrosse players of the week were selected in a vote by League women’s lacrosse communications contacts, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE ATTACKER OF THE WEEK
Emma Hare, American, Sr., Attack, Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton
*Hare recorded a game- and season-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead American to a 12-7 victory over Holy Cross to improve to 2-0 in League play.
*The senior attacker matched a season-high three goals on five shots while tallying a season-high two assists.
*Her three goals came in the first quarter to help the Crusaders take an 8-1 lead.

PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE MIDFIELDER AND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Ava Yovino, Navy, Fr., Midfielder, Parkland, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas
*Yovino posted a game-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead Navy to a 15-4 win over Lehigh to improve to 2-0 in League play.
*The freshman midfielder added two draw controls, two caused turnovers and one ground ball in the win over the Mountain Hawks.
*She scored two of her three goals during the Mids’ 6-0 third-quarter run. Her three goals came on six shots.

PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ella Payer, Bucknell, Sr., Defender, Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs
*Payer totaled 11 draw controls, six ground balls and five caused turnovers to help Bucknell split a two-game week, including a 17-15 victory over Lafayette.
*She led all players with nine draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers in a win over the Leopards. Her draw control with 1:07 remaining in the game allowed the Bison to run out the clock on the victory.
*The senior defender became the program’s career leader in draw controls (172), breaking a 14-year-old record.

PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Emma Richardell, Navy, So., Goalkeeper, Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson
*Richardell tied her career-high with 11 saves to lead Navy to a 15-4 victory at Lehigh to improve to 2-0 in League play.
*The sophomore goalkeeper held the Mountain Hawks to a season-low four goals, the fewest number of goals she has allowed in a game this season.
*She also picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover in the win against Lehigh.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Mary Alice Collins, American, Jr., Goalkeeper, Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park
*Collins made 10 saves and allowed seven goals to lead the Eagles to a 12-7 victory over Holy Cross. She picked up nine ground balls in the game to help American remain undefeated in League play.

Bliss Vernon, American, Fr., Defender, Wellesley, Mass./Deerfield Academy
*Vernon picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers in American’s 12-7 victory over Holy Cross.

Lacey Bartholomay, Army West Point, Jr., Goalkeeper, Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes
*Bartholomay faced 19 shots and made 11 saves, allowing eight goals, in Army West Point’s 12-8 victory over Colgate. The Alexandria, Va. native recorded three ground balls in the win.

Brigid Duffy, Army West Point, Fr., Midfielder, Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury
*Duffy recorded four points on three goals and one assist, her sixth game of the season with three or more goals. She added six draw controls, and three caused turnovers in the Black Knights’ 12-8 win over Colgate.

Allie Boyce, Bucknell, So., Attack, Falls Church, Va./Georgetown Visitation Prep
*Boyce totaled eight points on five goals and three assists, helping the Bison split two games, including a 17-15 win over Lafayette. She also added seven ground balls and four caused turnovers during Bucknell’s two-game week.   

Katie Detwiler, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Defender, Devon, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll
*Detwiler recorded three draw controls and one ground ball while holding Boston University’s Matty Spaeth without a point in the Greyhounds’ 15-1 victory.

Lauren Spence, Loyola Maryland, So., Goalkeeper, Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen
*Spence made eight saves and held Boston University to one goal, a new career-best for the sophomore goalkeeper, in Loyola Maryland’s 15-1 win.

Jillian Wilson, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Midfielder, Hampstead, Md./Gerstell Academy
*Wilson finished with three goals, seven draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover in No. 9 Loyola Maryland’s 15-1 victory over Boston University. The Hampstead, Md. native recorded her fifth hat trick of the season.

Grace Peterson, Navy, So., Defender, Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka
*Peterson finished with three ground balls while helping the Mids hold Lehigh to a season-low four goals in Saturday’s 15-4 win. Navy held Lehigh scoreless in the second half, marking the first time the Mids held an opponent scoreless in a half since its 22-2 win over George Washington in 2021.

Leelee Denton, Navy, Jr., Attack, Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall
*Denton recorded a team-high four goals on six shots in the Mids’ 15-4 victory at Lehigh to improve to 2-0 in League play. The reigning Patriot League Attacker of the Week and USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Athlete of the Week posted her third straight game with three or more goals.
