PBA: Women’s Lacrosse Starts Season with 13-8 Home Win over Young Harris

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse team started its season tonight by playing host to Young Harris College. The Sailfish jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they held off a Mountain Lion second-half scoring run to secure the 13-8 victory. The Sailfish move to 1-0 on the season as head coach Katy Richardson gets the win in her PBA debut.

PBA jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Ella Howlin and Anna Laskaris each scored in the opening three minutes. After the quick start, both goalies took over as each offense was shut out the rest of the quarter. Sailfish freshman goalie Courtney Rausch looked impressive in her college debut as she made four saves in the opening quarter of play.

The offenses came to life in the second quarter as the Sailfish were able to net six goals. Addyson Johnson and Anna Laskaris scored early in the quarter as PBA took a 4-0 lead before the Mountain Lions finally broke through at the 7:03 mark finally ending Rausch’s shutout. The ‘Fish scored three of the next four goals to jump to a 7-2 lead. Hunter Levinson had the hot hand in the second as she scored three goals including the last with 24 seconds remaining as PBA took a comfortable 8-3 lead into the halftime locker room.

Young Harris knew they needed to strike soon if they were going to make it a game and they did coming out to start the second half as they scored the first three goals of the third quarter to cut the deficit to two goals. The Sailfish battled back though with a 4-0 scoring run of their own as Kaelin DeNeui scored to end the third and Katie Karlsen, Levinson, and Chelsea Smith scored to start the fourth. PBA grew their lead back to six as they led comfortably 12-6. The Mountain Lions would score two more in the fourth quarter and Laskaris would tack on another for PBA as they captured the 13-8 win.

The Sailfish outshot the Mountain Lions 33-24 in the game and 28-19 in shots on goal. The two sides were even throughout the night on draw controls as Young Harris had the upper hand 13-12. PBA won big in groundballs, 37-21, and won the turnover battle 32-21 to gain extra possession. Levinson and Laskaris were the stars offensively for PBA as they scored four and three goals respectively. Defensively, Katie Caras led the way with a game-high six ground balls.

The Sailfish have a long break ahead, as they don’t take the field again until Feb. 26 at Flagler. The Saints have yet to compete in a game but the game against the Sailfish will be their fifth when they faceoff.
