Nine different Tars scored goals on Thursday

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. (March 2, 2023) – The ninth-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team scored early and often on Thursday afternoon as the Tars routed Shorter, 20-2, in a neutral-site game hosted by Young Harris. The Tars are now 4-0 on the year, while the Hawks drop to 2-4.

Lily Thornewill scored a career- and game-high five goals, while Caroline Bailey, Molly Mendes, and Ashley Goldstein all set or tied career-highs with three goals apiece. Mendes also set career-highs for assists (3), points (6), and ground balls (3). Delanie Aberie collected a career- and game-high four ground balls to go along with a goal and an assist, while Holyn Trautwein led all players with five draw controls and added a goal and a ground ball. Rachel Schlesinger (3-0) got the win in goal, stopping one of the two shots she faced. Claire Barber made two saves on two shots and Anya Studebaker tallied a save on two shots in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

• Goldstein got the Tars on the board first with a goal from Charlotte Gastonguay 90 seconds into the game.
• Less than a minute later, Abigail DeGroat found the net to make it 2-0.
• 53 seconds after that, Goldstein scored again, with Bailey netting her first tally at the 10:28 mark to give Rollins a 4-0 lead.
• Mendes’ first goal came with 7:40 on the clock, which was followed less than a minute later by Thornewill’s first of the day, pushing the lead to 6-0.
• 63 seconds after her first goal, Thornewill scored again, increasing the margin to 7-0.
• After Shorter got its first goal of the game at the 5:17 mark, Bailey got her second of the game to make it 8-1.
• Lauren Noonan scored her first of the game with 3:37 on the clock, with Bailey following up with goal number three just 47 seconds later.
• The lead reached double digits when Noonan scored her second of the game, putting the Tars up 11-1 with 2:05 to play in the first quarter.
• Thornewill got the final goal of the period, her third of the game, with 1:17 left, giving Rollins a 12-1 advantage after one quarter.

Second Quarter

• Thornewill wasted no time tallying goal number four, scoring just 53 ticks into the second quarter.
• Goldstein completed her hat trick with 11 minutes to go before halftime, increasing the lead to 14-1.
• Aberie found the net with 6:54 to go, which would be the final tally of the first half, with the Tars holding a commanding 15-1 edge.

Third Quarter

• Jorie Alf scored her first goal of the season with 5:40 to play in the third, one of only two goals (the other by Shorter) scored in the quarter, as Rollins took a 16-2 lead into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

• Trautwein found the back of the net in a woman-up situation just over two minutes into the fourth, with Mendes getting her second goal just over a minute later.
• Thornewill tallied her fifth goal with 7:37 on the clock, and Mendes completed her hat trick with 3:36 to go, marking the final goal of the 20-2 victory.

UP NEXT:
The Tars will have a day off before they take on Young Harris on the same field they won on today. The game against the Mountain Lions is set for Saturday, March 4 at 11 a.m.
