Saint Leo Lions Come Out Victorious 14-12 in Hard Fought Game Versus Chargers

SAINT LEO, FL – The #20 Saint Leo Women’s Lacrosse Team victorious in a close battle versus the Chargers from Alabama Huntsville.

With the win, the Lions improve to a 5-0 record to begin the season.

The Chargers were the first to strike but Saint Leo struck back a few minutes later thanks to Senior Ashlee Wilsynski’s goal from a free position attempt.

After scoring, the Lions kept the Chargers from reaching the back of the net for the rest of the quarter.

Alabama Huntsville fought back once again in the second with the first goal of the quarter. Less then a minute later, Wilsynski once again found the back of the net to keep the Lions from suffering an uncontested run.

Both teams scored four goals in the quarter as the Chargers were not going down without a fight versus the newly top 20 Lions. At one point, Alabama Huntsville had a one goal thanks to a three-goal run before the Lions bounced back with a trio of their own which consisted of goals from Freshman Sophia Wood, Graduate Kealey Allison, and Junior Fiona McLaughlin.

The halftime score was 7-5 with the Green & Gold in the lead.

More of the same occurred in the third quarter as both teams scored three times in the 15 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions kept scoring with the Chargers answering back but not at the same rate.

With one minute left, the Chargers pulled within two scores. They had a free position attempt with 30 seconds left but the Lions’ Freshman goalie Jessica Harclerode made the all-important save that helped seal the game.

The Lions’ leading scorer was Fiona McLaughlin with five goals with Ashlee Wilsynski close behind with four.

Sophomore Maria Palomba was a force in the midfield with six groundballs which also led the team in the category.

Jessica Harclerode had 11 saves as the Lions finished the game with a 14-12 win.

Saint Leo is back in action versus Montevallo on March 11th with the face-off scheduled for 7:00pm.
