Saint Leo Women: #23 Lions Come Up Short against #21 Hawks

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 23 Saint Leo Lions took a tough loss by the No. 21 Saint Anselm Hawks in a 17-9 decision on Wednesday under the University Turf Stadium lights. The nationally-ranked non-conference meeting moved the Lions’ overall record to 3-6 while the Hawks improved to 3-0.

Fiona McLaughlin had a hot night shooting for the Lions as she scored three goals in different bursts for the Green and Gold on the attack. Delaney Gilchrist followed with another good game as she picked up two assists and netted a goal. Eliz Fino also added three points to the efforts.

Maria Palomba led the Lions with 11 draw controls and picked up two ground balls. In the net, freshman Makayla Goetz picked up 10 saves in 60 minutes of work.

The Lions got outscored 10-4 in the first half as well as getting beat in time of possession. Saint Leo found opportunities throughout the game but couldn’t build enough momentum during the late stretch. The Green and Gold recorded 20 shots on goal and 18 total draw controls as a team. The Lions went 16-17 on clear attempts on the ride.

The Lions will continue their home streak schedule on Wednesday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. Saint Leo will be set to host Colorado Mesa in a non-conference matchup.
