SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 23 Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team dropped an 18-11 decision to a tough Grand Valley State Thursday night under the lights. The non-conference tilt moved the Green and Gold’s overall record to 1-2, while the visiting Lakers opened up their season 1-0.

Fiona McLaughlin had a tremendous night with four points netting four goals. Ashlee Wilsynski also recorded four points finding the back of the net twice and registering a pair of assists.

Grand Valley State was the first to add a tick to the scoreboard at University Turf Stadium. The Lakers jumped ahead to a 6-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes recording a three-goal run and two unanswered to finish the quarter.

Lia Lamendola and McLaughlin came alive in the second quarter for the Green and Gold. The duo strung three consecutive goals to slash the Lakers’ lead to one at 6-5. Emma Hayhurst joined in on the fun. The freshman attacker netted back-to-back goals to level the scoreboard at seven points apiece. The Lakers answered Hayhurst and notched the leader title once again. The dynamic duo got to work once again; Lamendola fed a perfect pass to McLaughlin who kept the game tied up, 8-8. Despite the second-quarter offensive movement, Grand Valley State was able to put in the last word of the half with a three-goal run; 11-8.

Grand Valley State pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Green and Gold 6-2. The Lions and Lakers each recorded one more each in the fourth for the 18-11 final.

In the net, Rachel Smythe earned her first start of the young season in which she put in all 60 minutes of work. The junior goalkeeper racked up 14 saves.

Saint Leo will continue its season at University Turf Stadium. The Lions are set to host the Royals of Queens on Friday, Feb 25 at 4:00 p.m.
