Rollins kept its perfect season alive with the 11-10 win

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 17, 2023) – The ninth-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team kept its perfect season alive with a thrilling 11-10 overtime win over No. 20 New Haven on Friday night. The Tars go to 9-0 on the year while the Chargers drop to 3-2. With the win, Rollins Head Coach Dennis Short earned his 200th career victory as a head coach, with 179 of those victories coming at Rollins.

Abigail Cawley tallied six points on three goals and three assists to go along with two ground balls, while Caroline Gastonguay chipped in with three goals, one assist, one ground ball, and one caused turnover. Lily Thornewill and Madison McGarry each contributed two goals, with Thornewill also collecting two ground balls. Whitney MacMillan led the team with four draw controls to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Claire Barber (2-0) got her second straight win, stopping five shots while allowing 10 goals in 61:57 of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

• The Tars got on the board first with a goal from Thornewill at the 8:55 mark of the first, but New Haven responded with three straight goals to close out the quarter, giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Second Quarter

• Caroline Gastonguay netted the first two goals of the second, with Thornewill adding her second of the contest at the 10:12 mark to put Rollins back in front, 4-3.
• After a Charger goal, Abigail Cawley got her first of the night followed by Caroline Gastonguay completing her hat trick with 2:53 on the clock, pushing the lead to 6-4.
• New Haven got two goals late the in quarter, sandwiched around Abigail Cawley’s second goal, making it a 7-6 Tar lead at the half.

Third Quarter

• McGarry got Rollins’ only goal of the third, with New Haven answering late with a goal of their own, sending the game to the fourth quarter with the Tars leading it, 8-7.

Fourth Quarter

• Charlotte Gastonguay found the back of the net just over three minutes into the period to make it a 9-7 game, but UNH responded less than a minute later to cut the deficit to one again.
• Abigail Cawley completed her hat trick with 9:38 to go, but that would be the last Rollins goal of regulation.
• New Haven put home two goals in the final 3:14, knotting things up at 10.

Overtime

• The Chargers appeared to win the game just over a minute into the overtime period, but the goal was disallowed on the grounds that the goal-scorer had entered the crease, resulting in a turnover.
• On the ensuing possession, the Tars raced down the field and earned a free-position attempt with just over a minute on the clock.
• McGarry took the free-position attempt and buried it in the back of the net for the game-winning goal 1:57 into the overtime period, giving the Tars an 11-10 win.

The Tars will return to the field next Thursday, March 23, when they host No. 24 Colorado Mesa at 7:30 p.m.
