TAMPA, FL. – The No. 2 ranked University of Tampa Spartans men’s lacrosse team would defeat the No.16 Florida Tech Panthers in a double overtime thriller at home.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Tampa Spartans (6-0, 1-0 SSC), Florida Tech Panthers (2-3, 0-1 SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

FIRST QUARTER

The first quarter would open with a defensive battle between the two teams. The Panthers would open the scoring with a goal about four minutes into the quarter. The Spartans started slow, and found themselves in a two-goal deficit with seven minutes left in the first. With 25 seconds left, Colin White cut into the Panthers lead going into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

The second quarter would begin similarly to the first, with both teams playing excellent defense. The Panthers opened the scoring once again, but the Spartans had an answer for that, with Luke McAnaney scoring late in the quarter.

02:45 – Luke McAnaney, assisted by Christian Borodiak.

Score: 5-2 Florida Tech

THIRD QUARTER

Tampa would come out of halftime with new life. The Spartans offense would get started about five minutes into the quarter, and score two goals with one minute of each other to cut into the Panthers’ lead. With three minutes left, the Spartans offense surged and got within two goals of the lead.

FOURTH QUARTER

Both teams would go back and forth in an evenly matched fourth quarter. The Spartans would open the scoring in the fourth quarter, pulling within one goal of the Panthers. The Panthers answered though, to bring the goal deficit back to two. The Spartans would end up tying the score at 5:50 with a goal by Daniel Fitzpatrick to force the game into overtime.

OVERTIME

No one scored in the first four, a second overtime was needed.

DOUBLE OVERTIME

With four seconds left, Harry Kilkowski netted the game winning shot for the Spartans to end the double overtime thriller.

Final: 11-10 Tampa

No. 16 Panthers Lose Heartbreaker to No. 2 Tampa in Double Overtime

INSIDE THE MATCHUP

FIRST QUARTER:

• Collin Stewart got the Panthers going early with an unassisted tally just 2:30 into the opening quarter to put Tech up 1-0. 
• Less than two minutes later, Justin Williams scored a man-up goal off an assist from Zach Rozgonyi to make the score 2-0. 
• Andrew Ward found the back of the net off a feed from Stewart and Bennett Duffy scored off an assist from Williams and the Panthers led 4-0 with 56 seconds to go in the quarter. 
• Tampa trimmed the margin to three with 24 seconds left and the Panthers went into the second leading 4-1. 

SECOND QUARTER:

• Goalie play picked up in the second quarter as neither team was able to register a goal until Stewart tallied his second of the game on a man-up opportunity to push Tech’s lead to 5-1 with 3:13 to go before halftime. 
• UT scored with 2:45 remaining and the Panthers carried a 5-2 advantage heading into halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER: 

• Stewart completed his hat trick early in the third quarter to increase Tech’s lead to 6-2 with 13:31 left in the frame. 
• After the Spartans cut the margin to 6-4, Nate Deplancke netted his only goal of the game to push the Panthers’ lead to 7-4 with 8:56 to go. 
• Another 2-0 run by Tampa made it a one-goal game with 4:39 remaining but Williams answered with an unassisted goal just over a minute later to give Tech an 8-6 edge at the end of the third. 

FOURTH QUARTER:

• Spartans outscored the Panthers 4-2 in the fourth quarter including tying the game at 10-10 with 5:50 remaining. 
• Stewart netted both of Tech’s goals in the frame, the second coming off an assist from Griffin Martin. 
• Neither team was able to score the game-winner over the waning moments and the contest was to be decided in overtime. 

OVERTIME:

• Tampa managed the only shot in the first overtime period, but John Hulsman came up with the save, one of his 10 stops in the game. 
• Both teams had their opportunities to win the game in the second overtime. However, it wasn’t until there were only seven seconds remaining in the period that the deciding goal was scored by Tampa to earn the 11-10 win. 

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

• Collin Stewart finished with a season-high 6 points on 5 goals and 1 assist to go along with 4 ground balls.
• Justin Williams recorded 2 goals and 1 assist.
• Nate Deplancke added 1 goal, 2 ground balls and 1 caused turnover.
• Bennett Duffy ended with 1 goal, 2 caused turnovers and 1 ground ball.
• Andrew Ward scored 1 goal.
• Zach Rozgonyi dished out on assist to go along with 4 ground balls and 1 caused turnover while Griffin Martin had 1 assist. 
• Ethan Tosheff won 12-26 faceoffs to go along with 6 ground balls.
• Josh Vetter collected 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers.
• Sam Balch and Austin Engeler each recorded 2 caused turnovers and 1 ground ball.
• John Hulsman finished with 10 saves in the contest, his fifth double-digit save game of the season.  

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

• Florida Tech finished with an edge in shots (43-39) and shots on goal (28-21). 
• Spartans collected more ground balls (47-37).
• Both teams were efficient on clear attempts with the Panthers going 26-28 compared to 28-30 for Tampa.
• Tech ended 2-4 on man-up tries while holding Tampa to 0-3 for the game. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

• Panthers are now 2-2 against ranked opponents this season. 
• The loss snaps Florida Tech’s 3-game win streak.  

UP NEXT: Florida Tech will have an 11-day break before returning to action on Wednesday, March 23 hosting Colorado Mesa at Panther Field. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.

No. 16 Panthers Nipped by No. 2 Tampa in Double-OT

The Tampa Spartans (6-0) only led once in Saturday’s men’s lacrosse shootout, winning 11-10 over the Florida Tech Panthers (4-3) in double overtime. This was a regional contest with the conference matchup slated for later in the season.

Harry Kilkowski scored his second goal of the day with seven seconds left in the second overtime, giving the Second-ranked Spartans the come-from-behind victory.

“So proud of the way our young men competed today,” said Panthers coach Brad MacArthur by email after the game. “Coming off the trip to Maryland we were a little beat up but we had a solid week of practice with no excuses.”
