Sailfish Defeat ERAU 12-11 On Senior Day

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team pulled out a 12-11 victory over Embry-Riddle Saturday at the Rinker Athletic Campus. PBA (5-7) picked up its first conference win of the season. Additionally, PBA is 3-0 all-time against Embry-Riddle. Prior to the game, PBA honored this year’s senior class of Austin EvansBen JusticeJonah RobertsonJake LittleZach HolmesCorbin Schneider, and Gunner Gebelein.

The Sailfish had seven different goal scorers. Henry Sloyan led the ‘Fish with four goals and two assists while Caleb Southard notched a hat-trick. Evans, Justice, Hunter HopmanDylan Insolia and Gebelein scored one goal each. Ben Lightsey was stellar in net for the ‘Fish with 10 saves. PBA committed seven less turnovers and picked up six more ground balls than ERAU. 

ERAU struck first to take a 1-0 lead with 8:32 in the first quarter. Less than a minute later,  Sloyan cranked a shot for a PBA equalizer. The Eagles responded with a 3-0 run for a 4-1 lead at 13:35 in the second quarter. The ‘Fish took back the momentum when they pumped in three unanswered. Sloyan’s second goal of the day cut the PBA deficit to 4-2. A freshman to freshman connection earned PBA’s third goal as Zach Layne assisted Southard at 9:46 in the second quarter. Hopman scored his 20th goal of the season at the 8:40 mark in the second quarter. Hopman tied the game at 4-4 when he ran right and ripped a shot top corner. The Eagles went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. PBA cut into the deficit with two more goals before the half ended. Sloyan assisted Southard for Southard’s second of the day with 3:27 left in the first half. Dylan Insolia’s ninth goal of the year brought the ‘Fish within one. ERAU led 7-6 at halftime. 

PBA dominated the start of the second half as they held Embry-Riddle scoreless in the third quarter. Justice capitalized off a failed ERAU clear and buried his shot which tied the game at seven. Justice has scored 21 goals this season. Sloyan scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter to put PBA up 9-7. Justice notched his fifth assist of the year on Sloyan’s fourth goal of the game. With 3:18 left in the third quarter, Evans built PBA’s lead when he launched a shot into the back of the net. Evans has notched 17 goals this season. PBA led 10-7 after the third quarter. 

ERAU ended their scoring drought with a man-up goal with 14:31 left in the game. Sloyan assisted Southard for the second time at 13:01. Sloyan leads the Sailfish in goals with 25 and assists with 10 this season. PBA’s last goal of the game came from Gebelein. The senior from Huntingtown Maryland cleared the ball, ran right down the heart of the ERAU defense and ripped a shot for his fourth goal of the year. Additionally, Gebelein recorded four caused turnovers with seven groundballs. 

The Eagles closed out the game on a 3-0 run but it wasn’t enough. ERAU scored a goal with 14 second left and possessed the ball in the games final moments. ERAU took one final shot at as time expired that Lightsey saved to prevent overtime.

Men’s Lacrosse Rally Falls Short Against Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men’s lacrosse team outscored Palm Beach Atlantic 4-2 in the last 15 minutes of play but were unable to get by Palm Beach Atlantic at the PBA Soccer/Lacrosse Field on Saturday. The Sailfish (5-7, 1-4) narrowly edged the Eagles 12-11, bringing ERAU’s record to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the Sunshine State Conference.
 
Trailing by four early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles played their way back into contention and had an opportunity to send the game to overtime. However, their last second attempt sailed was saved, giving the Sailfish the win.
 
Pete Abbes had three scores to pace the Eagle offense, while Coleman JacobsChristian Hofer and Joe Anderson netted two goals each.
 
With his two goals in Saturday’s game, Coleman Jacobs made program history becoming the first ERAU men’s lacrosse player to score 100 career goals.
 
ERAU took the game to the Sailfish in the first period, as the Jacobs/Anderson/Hofer trio each recorded a goal to stake the Eagles to a 3-1 lead.
 
Anderson’s second goal opened the scoring in the second quarter, but a three-goal scoring run by PBA tied the game at 4-4 with 8:40 left in the period. Abbes, Jacobs and Lars Hoeg combined for an ERAU scoring run that pushed the Eagle lead back to three (7-4), but the Sailfish answered once again and cut the deficit to 7-6 at the half.
 
The third quarter saw the PBA defense shut down the Eagle offense and the home team capitalized on the Eagles’ offensive struggles to take a 10-7 advantage into the final frame.
 
Abbes scored a man-up goal to start the fourth quarter, but back-to-back scores by the Sailfish helped them to their biggest lead of the game, 12-8. Abbes scored again at the 10-minute mark and Gage Poindexter’s score made it a two-goal game with 4:53 left to play. With 14 seconds left, Marcus Needham found Hofer on the right side and the redshirt freshman fired a long-range shot past PBA goalie Ben Lightsey to cut the PBA lead to 12-11.
 
Mark Urso got one of his 16 face-off wins on the ensuing face off and had a look at the goal, but his shot went wide. The Eagles got the ball back with 1.9 seconds left and after a PBA timeout, they were able to get Hofer the ball, but his attempt was stopped by Lightsey to end the game.
 
The Eagles wrap up regular season play at home on Wednesday when they host top-ranked Tampa at 4 p.m.
