Tars Defeat Lions to Move Closer to SSC Tournament Qualification

Rollins earned a vital Sunshine State Conference victory, defeating Saint Leo, 19-11, under the lights at Cahall Sandspur Field

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 20, 2022) – Rollins earned a vital Sunshine State Conference victory, defeating Saint Leo, 19-11, under the lights at Cahall Sandspur Field.  The No. 10 Tars improve to 13-2 overall, and 4-2 in conference action.  The Lions fall to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in SSC play.

Taylor Kienle led Rollins with, a career high, six goals.  Caroline Gastonguay matched her teammate with six points, coming on five goals and one assist.  Charlotte Gastonguay added a hat trick for Rollins.  Abigail Cawley tallied three points with one goal, and, a team high, two assists.  Abigail DeGroat scored once, and led the team with nine draw controls.  Rachel Schlesinger made ten saves for the Tars, playing the full 60 minutes between the pipes.

Melissa Reeves and Fiona McLaughlin led the Lions, tallying three goals each.  Kaci Archer registered a pair of scores.  Maria Palomba tallied once while collecting, a game high, 11 draw controls.  Makayla Goetz and Rachel Smythe split time in net for Saint Leo, combining for seven stops.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

Second Quarter

  • Saint Leo started the second quarter with a four goal run, drawing the teams level, at 7-7.
  • A pair of Caroline Gastonguay goals, both assisted by Abigail Cawley, put Rollins back in control.
  • The Lions scored to pull back within one, but Rollins responded with two late goals, a long distance effort from Claire Reist and Taylor Kienle’s fourth goal pushed the Tars’ lead to 11-8 at the half.

Third Quarter

  • Rollins went on a four goal run to pull away from the Lions to open the second half.  Four different Tars, Charlotte Gastonguay, Reist, Abigail DeGroat, and Taylor Kienle, scored to grow the advantage.
  • The Lions tallied late in the quarter, but Rollins took a 15-9 lead into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

UP NEXT:
The Tars will close the regular season with a trip to Melbourne, Florida, to take on Florida Tech.  First draw against the Panthers is set for Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m.

Reeves and McLaughlin Offensive Burst Not Enough in Winter Park

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team fell 19-11 to No. 10 Rollins Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) midweek meeting on the road. The Lions were led by Melissa Reeves and Fiona McLaughlin each with a hat-trick. Despite the efforts, the Green and Gold’s overall record moved to 6-10, 3-3 in the SSC.
 
Reeves earned a career-high four points adding an assist to her three goals against the Tars. The graduate student attacker netted a trio off eight shots, five of which were placed on frame.
 
Rollins got ahead by four after the first quarter of action. The Lions edged the Tars by one in the second quarter, but Rollins would close out the second half outscoring Saint Leo 8-3.
