Tampa Defeats Saint Leo to Go Undefeated in SSC Play 15-11 – Both Press Releases

  • Saint Leo took a two-goal lead to start the game.
  • At 7:39, Andrew Kew started the firing squad for Tampa, assisted by Sean Herdman.
  • Two minutes later, Gavin Perry had his first goal of the season.
  • Conor Whipple had his first goal of the game with 3:02 left in the period, Tampa now leading 3-2.
2nd Period
  • The Lions tied the game to 3-3 12:25.
  • One minute later, Tampa took the lead again with a goal from Andrew Kew, assisted by Jake Schmidt.
  • Herdman tacks on another goal for Tampa.
  • At 9:15, Saint Leo brings the game to 5-4.
  • With Kew’s third goal of the game, he breaks the NCAA DII record for goals in one season with now 73.
  • The Lions answer with a goal, still trailing 6-5.
  • Chris Vetter takes an unassisted goal at 5:08.
  • About 30 seconds later, Jake Mosher McGraw tacks on another one for Tampa.
  • Another Saint Leo goal with two minutes left in the period.
  • Herdman had his second goal of the game with 1:14 left in the period.
  • Saint Leo sneaks past the Spartans defense with :34 on the clock, Tampa leading 9-7 going into half-time.
3rd Period
  • C. Vetter had his second goal of the game to open the period.
  • Mosher McGraw takes advantage of a man-up situation to bring Tampa’s lead to 11-7.
  • Schmidt had back-to-back goals, one assisted by Herdman.
  • Kew teamed up with Whipple at 3:33.
  • After five Spartan goals, the Lions responded with a goal, Tampa leading 14-8.
4th Period
  • Mosher McGraw has the first Tampa goal of the period at 13:18.
  • Saint Leo had three goals in a row to bring the score diminish Tampa’s lead to 15-11.
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Kew led all Spartans in goals with four.
  • Whipple had four points with one goal and three assists.
  • Mosher McGraw tallied three goals.
  • Sam Watts went 13-for-22 on face-off wins while Alex Patton went 5-for-6.
  • C.Vetter, Schmidt, and Herdman each tallied two goals.
  • A.J. Arnold had ten saves in net.

The Lions saw junior Anthony Visintin lead the way with four points after scoring the hat-trick and adding an assist. Both Kyle Pauwels and Jake Gilmour added three points. Pauwels finished with two goals and an assist, while Gilmour dished out two dimes and added a goal. Defensively, Jake Bye caused four turnovers and added four ground balls, while Nick Buckley added two caused turnovers and one ground ball. The Basics Saint Leo fell to #12 Tampa, 15-11 Location: Saint Leo, Fla. | University Turf Stadium Records: Saint Leo 9-5, 1-4 SSC | Tampa 12-4, 5-0 SSC How it happened 1Q | Saint Leo jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Bruce Preeschl netted the opening score off a Joe Serrecchia pass. Jake Gilmour then found Kyle Pauwels to make it 2-0 in favor for the Lions. However, the Spartans would rattle off three straight unassisted goals to close out the quarter. Thomas Tatarian made eight saves in the period. | UT 3-2 2Q | Senior Josh Kaufling evened the game up at three-all with the first goal of the second period. Back-to-back Spartan scored gave the visitors back the lead. Zach Lysyk tacked on a rip for the Lions, but the Spartans responded with another score. Senior Liam Christensen would pick up an errant ground ball behind the cage and wrap around the net for the score. Tampa would extend their lead to 8-5. Anthony Visintin would score his first game, but the Spartans would counter with another score. Visintin then found Pauwels for the closing score of the period. | UT 9-7 3Q | The Spartans dominated out of the break, scoring four goals before the Lions are able to get on the board. With 1:22 left in the period, Zach Lysyk found Visintin for the score. | UT 14-8 4Q | After digging themselves a hole, the Lions came out firing in the final period. Saint Leo took 19 shots in the period to just five by the Spartans. The Spartans were able to get on the board first at the 13:18 mark, increasing their lead. Saint Leo would close the game on a three-goal bender, as Gilmour found Charlie Kurtenbach for the man-up goal. Pauwels then found Gilmour for another man-up score.
