Webber: #10 Men’s Lacrosse Extends Win Streak with Rout of #7 TWU

ATHENS, Tenn. (March 5, 2023) – The stretch of road-games continued on Saturday afternoon as the Webber International University men’s lacrosse team returned to conference action in a matchup against No. 7 Tennessee Wesleyan University. The Warriors locked down the Bulldogs as they limited them to just three goals scored in an emphatic 19-3 victory.

The Warriors’ (7-0, 3-0) defense completely shut down the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-2), holding them scoreless for the entirety of the second half. That is the fewest goals against in a single game in Webber’s short three-year history thus far.

It took just 14 seconds for the Bulldogs to draw first blood in this one. Christian Tapia responded with a goal of his own roughly 40 seconds later. TWU regained the lead a couple minutes later with yet another goal, however, that was the last time it held the lead for the remainder of the game. Freshman Jeremiah Loo and Dillon Ziemba both netted unassisted goals to earn a 3-2 advantage for the Warriors heading into quarter number two.

The Warriors scored three more times to open the second quarter including two from Nick Sheaffer, extending the lead to 6-2. The Bulldogs scored their third and final goal before Sheaffer netted once again to earn his hat-trick in just the second quarter. Webber was able to find the back of the cage on three more occasions before halftime, extending the lead to seven.

Possession and ball-control was the name of the game in the second half as the Warriors held TWU scoreless throughout the second half. Webber tallied four in the third quarter including Houston Finlayson’s first of the game and Loo’s third, earning him his hat-trick. The Warriors kept their foot on the gas and recorded five more in the final quarter to seal the dominant 19-3 victory over No. 7 TWU.

Offensively, Webber was led by Sheaffer who finished with three goals and an assist for a total of four points. He was followed by Loo with three goals, netting his fourth hat-trick in six games so far this season. Chase Jackson and Blake Nelson both ended the game with two goals and an assist as well. Finlayson and Cade McCarron both added two goals while Connor Herring tallied a goal and an assist.

Hunter Scott went 14-of-24 from the spot with two ground balls. Cameron Paleski led the team in ground balls with three and added a caused turnover as well. Junior goalie Alex Cordero spent the whole game in net for the Warriors, allowing just three goals and recording eight saves.

Webber will face its toughest test of the season so far as they now travel to Georgia to take on the defending NAIA-Champions, No. 1 Reinhardt University, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7th.
