Webber Men: Alexander Kew Signs with Georgia Swarm of the NLL

via Webber press release

DULUTH, Ga. (September 21, 2022) – Alexander Kew, a former member of the Webber International University men’s lacrosse team has inked a two-year contract with the Georgia Swarm of the National Lacrosse League.

Kew was an integral part of the Warriors’ first two seasons as a program. He led the team in goals scored in both 2021 (21) and 2022 (40). Kew finished his senior season in 2022 with 40 goals, tied for 16th in the NAIA, and had a total of 55 points, tied for 23rd nationally. He helped lead the Warriors to an 11-6 season in which they reached the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament and were on the cusp of getting a call for the NAIA Invitational Tournament.

Thinking that the 2022 NLL Entry Draft was his draft year, Kew was hoping to be selected in the most recent draft. However, due to several factors as well as some miscommunication, he discovered that his draft year was actually 2020. Kew nor the teams in the league were aware of this and therefore he was undrafted, making him a “street free agent”. This meant that he was able to have talks with any of the teams in the league and after a few weeks of discussions with different teams, he decided on the Georgia Swarm. “The management, the roster, and the city all felt right to me so it was an easy decision,” said Kew.

Earlier in the pre-season, the Swarm made a draft to acquire Kew’s older brother, Andrew Kew who spent last season in the NLL with the Albany Firewolves. Kew spoke on playing with his older brother, saying “Until this summer, I had never played with my older brother. With the Oakville Rock OSL we finally got the opportunity, so it won’t be a completely brand new experience. However, we have never played together at the highest level against the top talent in the game, and that is an incredibly exciting feeling. It also makes our parents’ lives easier, only having to get one jersey and having one team to cheer for!”

When asked about his experience at Webber and with Coach Burdick, Kew said “Coach Burdick has been nothing but the best to my entire family and I have endless respect for him. He had faith in my abilities and ensured that I was down here to help him build his very own lacrosse program here at Webber. We were one spot back of the national tournament in our second year so you can see how great of a job coach has done.”

Kew will be returning for Webber’s 2023 season as a volunteer assistant coach, helping whenever he can. “Unfortunately, with my game schedule with Georgia, my role with Webber isn’t going to be as large as I wish it could be but I plan on being as involved with the program as possible. I can’t wait to watch the program continue to grow and see the success it’s going to have. This year’s roster is very exciting and making me wish I was playing this year. You can expect big things from Webber men’s lacrosse in the spring of 2023.”

The Warriors are set to open their season on Saturday, January 24th, as they take on Point University in Tallahassee, Florida at 3 p.m.
