Zeruto Powers #18 Women’s Lacrosse Past Montevallo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kenley Zeruto totaled a career-best 10 points to lead the 18th-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s lacrosse team past Montevallo, Wednesday at the Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Stadium. Wednesday’s win saw the Eagles go undefeated in seven games to wrap up a perfect March and improve to 9-1 overall.
Zeruto’s 10-point performance included a career-high six goals and four assists. Sallie Squire, Alexa Zeruto and Samantha Reich each chipped in two goals with Squire and Reich winning three draw controls each and Squire registering game highs in ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (5).
The first quarter saw Kenley Zeruto help the Eagles take a 6-3 lead with three goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Both teams were level at 1-1 through the first 3:30 until Alexa Zeruto broke the deadlock, which triggered a five-goal outburst over the next eight minutes.
Montevallo scored the last two goals of the first quarter, but that momentum did not carry over into the second as the Zeruto sisters combined for the first two goals of the second period to put the Eagles up 8-3. Kiley Shea managed to put a couple of goals on the board for the Falcons, but Kenley Zeruto, Madison Ellwod and Zariah Durham each got into the scoring column to give the Blue and Gold an 11-5 advantage at the half.
The Montevallo offense was lively to start the third, scoring twice in the first three minutes to narrow the Eagle lead to 11-7. But whatever momentum the Falcons had to start the period was quickly stymied by the Eagles who scored four unanswered to goals to take a 15-7 lead into the final frame.
A fairly even fourth saw the Eagles and the Falcons register seven shots apiece. Mackenzie Griffin held the Eagles at bay with five saves in the period, but the Falcons were unable to capitalize as they added just two goals to their tally in their bid to catch up to ERAU. Squire capped the game’s scoring with a free position goal to help the Eagles to their ninth win of the year.
The Eagles will play their first Sunshine State Conference game of the season on Saturday, hosting Florida Tech (RV) at 1 p.m.
