CAMDEN, N.J.- The JU men’s lacrosse team dominated the third quarter but Rutgers pulled away with four unanswered goals to end the contest as the Dolphins lost to Rutgers, 10-6, on Tuesday night at RU Turf Field.
JU lost its third straight in falling to 2-5.Â Robert Moore and Bobby Stockton each scored two goals for the Dolphins. But Scott Klimchak scored four goals and added an assist, tallying the go-ahead goal early in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback and move Rutgers to 5-1.
Down 6-2 in the first half’s waning moments, Stockton scored on Culver Bradbury’s feed with 1:53 remaining to cut Rutgers’ lead to three entering the break. The Dolphins came out of halftime strongly, keeping the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard while Stockton tallied two goals and Moore scored for three goals in a 3:50 span to tie the contest at 6 entering the fourth quarter.
Rutgers regrouped in the fourth quarter to pull away. Klimchak fired a shot past goalie Peter DeLuca 4:26 into the fourth for the game-winner. Â Kevin Hover and Will Mangan scored two insurance goals just 1:23 apart and Anthony Terranova added the final margin with 3:06 left.
JU took an early lead in the contest with Donovan Lange and Max Gurowski scoring back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 edge nearly 10 minutes in. Gurowski, who entered with a team-best 16 points, still holds the top spot thanks to his even-strength marker.
Yet RU then raced to a 5-0 lead and would never trail again. Nicolas Zerrillo, Michael Diehl and Klimchak scored three goals in almost nine minutes in the second quarter.
DeLuca was strong early in posting four of his seven total saves in the opening quarter. The Dolphins also dominated on faceoffs in winning 15-of-20. But Rutgers generated 10 more clear attempts than JU and Rudy Butler made eight saves to secure the win.
Stockton scored both his goals as a reserve and leads the team with 14 total goals. Â Â
The Dolphins will look to rebound when it starts play against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams. JU’s first-ever conference game will come Saturday when the squad caps a three-game road trip with a contest at Canisius on Saturday. Game time is set for noon in Buffalo.
