GREENVILLE, N.C. – After being idle for the last several weeks, the Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team returned to the field Saturday afternoon, taking on East Carolina University. Despite trailing early, the Dolphins (2-0) rode the performances of Alyssa Arnold and Sarah Elms to beat the Pirates (2-4) by a final score of 12-9.
“The winning edge today was our GKs, they had a great game this afternoon,” said head coach Mindy McCord. “Addy (Tysdal) was extremely consistent and Dayna (Martinetto) provided critical saves in the second half. It was good to see our offense get distributed out across so many people scoring and recording assists.”
“Molly (Brock) really dominated draw possessions and possession time was a goal of ours today. We will have a chance to get some things cleaned up this week as we prepare for Florida.”
After ECU scored the first two goals of the game, Jenny Kinsey scored on a ball from Brianna Samuels to get the Dolphins on the board. Alyssa Arnold scored her first goal of the game moments later to tie things at 2-2.
Sarah Elms put the Dolphins ahead nearly six minutes in, converting on a free position attempt to make it 3-2. Arnold scored her second goal of the game about six minutes later to double the JU advantage.
ECU scored their third goal of the game near the midway point in the first half, preceding a nearly 11-minute scoreless stretch. Arnold scored her third goal of the game about six minutes before the end of the half with an assist from Jenny Kinsey to make it 5-3 going into the intermission.
The Dolphins outshot the Pirates 14-9 over the first 30 minutes, with all 14 shots on goal.
ECU came out firing in the second half, scoring twice in the first three minutes to tie the game at five. Lauren Phillips responded for the Dolphins, scoring an unassisted goal four minutes into the period.
Elms scored a man-up goal at 23:49 later to extend the JU lead back to two, and was the first of three-straight JU goals. Kinsey scored on a pass from Arnold two minutes later before Arnold scored less than a minute later on a ball from Kasey Stevens to make it 9-6 Jacksonville.
ECU answered with a goal to stop the run and get back within two, but Elms scored again at 17:17 to make it 10-7. The Pirates battled back with two more goals and got back within one with 15 minutes to play, but JU’s defense held firm and shutout the home team for the remainder of the game.
Arnold scored her fifth goal of the game with 7:26 remaining on an assist from Grace Hobson before Stevens sealed things up, scoring on a ball from Phillips with a little over three minutes remaining to get to the final tally of 12-9.
Five Dolphins scored in the game, led by Arnold and Elms with five and three respectively. Molly Brock, Addy Tysdal and Caroline Peterson each had two ground balls in the game while Kinsey and Beth Cornelius each forced a pair of turnovers. Brock also led the Dolphins with seven draw controls in the game. Tysdal and Dayna Martinetto each recorded five saves in goal.
Up next, the Dolphins open their home campaign, welcoming #6 Florida to D.B. Milne Field on March 13 at 1 PM.
