During the same weekend that Lake Highland and St. Andrews battled for the State Title, Youth lacrosse was also in full playoff mode in Central Florida. The Florida Lacrosse Association (FLA) is made up of teams across Central Florida. In the Junior “A” (5th and 6th grade Division) eleven teams battled through a difficult eight game regular season. At the end of the season, four teams were left standing to fight it out in the playoffs on May 4, 2013, Swarm (Orlando), Jokers (Orlando), Scorpions (Clermont) and Outlaws (Windermere). In the first round, Swarm faced a very strong Outlaws club. Coming into the game, Swarm was 8-0 and the first seed in the playoffs. The game was back and forth the entire morning and was tied up 5-5 at the end of the first half. In the second half, Swarm was able to gain a 1 goal margin and was able to add a late goal to advance 8-6. Swarm was led by RJ Sanfilippo’s 3 goals and 1 assist. On the other half of the bracket an undefeated Jokers team faced a very good 7-1 Scorpions team. Scorpions showed up with their A game and was able to pull out a 6-3 win to advance to the finals.
In the finals, Swarm and Scorpions faced off on the turf of Lake Brantley High School Stadium. Scorpions won the first face off and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. After a long period of scoreless ball, Jack McKeever made a nice dodge from his midfield position to put Swarm on the scoreboard, 1-1. McKeever’s goal was followed by a nice dodge from his attack position by RJ Sanfilippo to make the score 2-1 Swarm. Dillon Worrell added a second half goal to bring the score to 3-1. After that, the stingy Swarm defense (only 10 goals allowed in the regular season) took over. Avery Douglas was able to fend off multiple shots from his goalie position. Jack Greeno’s tough play at face off coupled with stand out play from close defenders Justin Pridgen and Ben Calvert and solid team defense, allowed Swarm to keep a very strong Scorpions offense off the board the rest of the game. The Championship for the Swarm team concluded a 10-0 Spring season for Swarm. Swarm is coached by Richard Sanfilippo, Brian Moran, Mark Calvert and Bill Worrell. Scorpions are led by head coach Tony Williams.
