The Bishop Moore Hornets continued their winning ways with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over the visiting Ponte Vedra Sharks on Friday evening. Bishop Moore finishes the regular season at 14-3, while Ponte Vedra drops to 12-2. Bishop Moore had trouble hanging on to the ball early and Ponte Vedra got off to a quick start, taking a 3-0 lead on goals by Darby Brower, Anthony Pradella, and Patrick Carney. Bishop Moore would close the gap, as Joey McMahan and Charlie Moran answered for the Hornets, leaving the score 3-2 as the first quarter ended. Ponte Vedra came right back, with Marcus Dunlap scoring the first of his three goals with less than a minute gone in the second. Brendan Francis got on the board five minutes later, and the Shark lead was back up to three, 5-2. A slashing penalty put Bishop Moore in a man-up situation, which McMahan quickly took advantage of. The Hornets would then cut it to one, as McMahan fired a bullet past Shark goalie Connor Peaks with 0:16 seconds left in the half. Both teams slowed it down in the third quarter, as the offenses became more deliberate and possessed the ball for significant periods of time. Michael Bennett would tie the game at 5, scoring with just over ten minutes remaining in the third. Dunlap would answer for the Sharks, and Ponte Vedra took a 6-5 lead heading into the final stanza. The Hornets tied it at 6 early in the 4th, as Ben Brockman took a quick feed from Bennett on a restart following a missed shot. Brockman would give Bishop Moore their first lead of the night with a little under six minutes remaining, as he snuck a low one past Peaks, who got a piece of it, but could only watch it trickle in. On the ensuing face-off, McMahan would score his fourth and final goal of the evening and the Hornets were up 8-6. The teams traded several possessions, and the Hornets appeared to take a 9-6 lead, but an apparent goal was ruled no good. The Hornet bench argued the call a little too vociferously and was hit with a misconduct penalty. Dunlap then took a feed from Francis, and the score was 8-7 Bishop Moore with 2:00 minutes left. Luke Ferry won the ensuing faceoff for the Hornets, who ran 44 seconds off the clock before Ponte Vedra was called for a hold. Bishop Moore subsequqntly turned the ball over, but the Hornet defense was able to fend off the Sharks and claim victory.
